Apparently he had been drumming with the Experience Hendrix Tour (veteran musicians who had known Hendrix and younger artists who have been influenced by him) recently, they did a show last Friday in Portland. |

| Re: Going to see Brian (For the first time!)/autograph session!! [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 13 Nov 2008 12:30 AM CST OK so i just got back from the ann arbor concert. I'll get more to the actual concert later. I'm beyond tired so i apologize for any possible spelling miskates. I drove 2 hours from canada in order to wait in line outside of Borders (Where Brian was to sign autographs). Not knowing how crazy the line was going to be, my girlfriend and I arrived there at 1am. Of course, no one was there. We parked infront of the store and slept in the back of the van until 5am. When we woke there was still no one to be seen! We parked the van in the parking garage and went back to borders and camped out in front of the store. We really overpacked. It wasn't nearly as cold as i had intended. shortly after that people started to arrive. Before i knew it I was "that canadian guy who got there at 1am". We received our wrist bands at 9:00am. I was so intent on being the first person in the line to meet Brian in the store. Hell, i was that canadian guy who arrived at one am, i deseved it! Ha. Well it turned out i was first in line. Brian came out around 12:30pm and looked pretty sad and afraid. The first thing that came to my mind was sad, lost puppy dog. He signed my vinyl of TLOS and my smile cd booklet but didn't say a word to me. (which i completely understand and am not mad about at all). I did say hello to Jeff who was standing beside him. I must say that Jeff is really nice guy. If it wasn't for him being there and incouraging brian and making him feel better about the hectic situation, i don't know how brian could have done it. Next in line was my girlfriend. She says hi to Brian. Brian doesn't respond. jeff tells brian to "say hello to the nice young lady". At that point brian looks up at her and GENUINLY smiles and says hello. He almost gave her a look of "Oh, well hello there sexy lady". it was quite the moment. After we got our autographs we stood outside of the line and continued to snap pictures of him. This guy is my musical idol, i might aswell milk this moment for aslong as i can. It was kind of depressing to see him looking in rough shape. He clearly did not want to be there. The facial and body expressions were a dead give away. Now onto the concert. I had never been to this venue before and i thought that our seats weren't going to be that great. When we get there we're about 22 rows back but right in the middle and we could see everything perfectly. I didn't expect to be that close to the stage. The show itself was just fantastic. The crowd wasn't really into the first few tunes, so jeff gets on his mic and jokingly says, "what's wrong with this crowd, did you all take sleeping pills before the show?" It didn't take long for them to start standing and dancing around. It was a really cool atmosphere. The band were lively and Brian did his usually dancing with the bass guitar and sending of vibes trough his fingers. Ha. When it came to Midnight's another day, everyone just locked completely into it. We all knew that was a special moment. During the break after the first set, my girlfriend and i went down to the stage where i took a pic of Brian's keyboard and stool and one of Darian fixing something on his keyboard. By the way my girlfriend thinks Darian just looks "f-ing cool". I just thought i'd share my experience with you all. This was my first Brian concert ever and it's safe to say that it's been a day i'll never forget. |

I have say that I totally respect where you are coming from, and I totally respect you as well, and that you are completely correct in what I assert. You are spot on. When SMiLE was created, at that time, you do have to admit that in order for Brian Wilson to be atop the pop world & keep pace with the Beatles, Brian would have to present the world with a largely LSD based LP. Don't you think that that was what "the moment" demanded? I mean. If all the Brian Wilson hype is to be believed then Brian was truly ahead of the Fab 4 & SMiLE was to beat them to "the moment" which turned out to be the release of Sgt. Pepper's & the "summer of love." If that moment could have instead been about SMiLE, then SMiLE (if we're to believe the hype) was equally, if not more, suited to be the LSD album for the generation. From all the readings I've done on LSD & the sixties there is no finer experience than the religious LSD experience. It seems a likely probable scenario that Wilson had such an experience. Such an experience fits with his claims from that period. The Americana stuff which is a glorified aspect of SMilE, may actually be due to a common LSD experience--that being the "going back in time " bit. If Brain were to combine the location of his LSD experience with this "going back in time" thing, the result could indeed be SMiLE's Americana styled lyrics and musical mood. Clever as well as multi-layered, meaningful, and deep, such lyrics and music would be the source of constant debate as to its true meaning. True, other interpretations are likely valid in the minds of those who present them (this includes me) but Brian Wilson knows what SMiLE is about (he has never stated differently. Note that such a statement of SMiLE cluelessness would have been a convenient "out" of his persistent being questioned about SMiLE nightmare). I honestly think that Brian had an LSD trip where he contemplated a "riddle" (a common sixties practice) and had a religious experience. SMiLE is essentially that experience in riddle form (thus capable of inspiring a similar experience). As far as Brian & Van Dyke keeping this all a secret, they've done a great job, don't you agree? Let me ask you this. Where did Brian's religious LSD experience take place? Here's a clue...not even his closest friends know. Why not? What's the problem? Heck, the SMiLE era "best friends" don't know what's up. Why not? Van Dyke will fill us in right? I mean, if you had the greatest experience of your life at some place you'd let folks in on it wouldn't you? Okay, so where did Brian Wilson have his super duper great religious, spiritual LSD trip? Check all of your sources and let me know. I'm waiting. |

I suppose a disease is a natural cause, and that would seem to be the case here: one doesn't tend to wear out and pass on from old age so young! Definitely a shame, he was one of my favorite drummers in rock music. |

And, as they are playing these Christmas songs, they have Christmas trivia on the screeen, and today it said: Born on Christmas, Noel Redding (1945). I got to thinking about the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and thought to myself, "You don't hear too much about Mitch Mitchell, I wonder what he's up to". He was only 62, that's younger than I thought he was. Very sad.... |

I think most of their early stuff better in mono except for Surfin' USA. Definitely sounds better in stereo! The mono version sounds muddy as hell. |

People would have given Sunflower a listen, Warners would have issued more singles, probably Forever and/or It's About Time, and Dennis would have been recognized as the Beach Boys new leader. The next album would have lead off with Sound of Free as a single and also included Lady, Fourth of July and Wouldn't it Be Nice To Live Again. (End alternate reality scenario) |
