Maybe part of Vega-tables, given his interest in the subject, except for the "tripped on a corunucopia" verse. Wind Chimes could also be Brian I suppose--sounds like a simple melancholy lyric along the lines of something he would write.

I would be very interested in knowing WHICH Smile lyrics Brian Wilson wrote.

Maybe "Barnyard" to my ears.

Re: Big News - Mike Love records with Al Jardine [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I wonder what Mike is getting in return for his singing on Al's album?  It seemed pretty obvious that, previously, Mike didn't need Al for his BB touring revue.

Obviously, a full on reunion needs Al and Mike, but, barring that, what does Mike get?

A cool head and a warm heart maybe?

I like these interviews. It's much more interesting to me to hear read) Brian talk about his work in the studio then to hear another interview detailing his illness

Re: The Definitive Vocal Credits Thread... [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Why do I get the feeling that this topic is heading towards kindergarten-level?

C'mon! Discussing 2 weeks (or 2 months fo that matter) is way too much for a 2-second-snippet of a random recording (well okay, it's God Only Knows, but still...).

Re: Steve Hoffman to remaster \ [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 03 Nov 2008 04:19 AM CST

The first mono/stereo version used the same 24 bit HDCD master but according to Mark it was re-equalised (by Andrew Sandoval), thereby ruining the HDCD encoding, even though the disc would still trigger HDCD players.  This version was pulled at the request of Mark Linett and Brian & Melinda,
1. Is that the Ron McMaster version from 1999 which was pulled?
2. Where do you THINK the master tape might be?
3. It is really interesting, but it wasn't necessary for the guy above to reproduce it in full!

Re: POB 3LP set [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I'd heard that about coloured vinyl too. Perhaps the issue was with picture discs. They pressed smaller grooves to keep the picture clearer.

That sounds plausible, even if it's not.

Re: I Was Made To Lover Her - question about Wild Honey song [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 03 Nov 2008 02:27 AM CST

Do you think it might be weird for Mike Love to sing so many songs with the word 'love' in the title?

It'd be like having songs called 'I Was Made to Wilson Her', 'Jardine Is A Woman', 'Never Learn Not to Johnston', 'Fataar & Mercy', 'Mike Kowalski Not War'.

Re: I Was Made To Lover Her - question about Wild Honey song [Smiley Smile Message Board]

He was joking about the thread title, with the extra "r".

 Roll Eyes  Brow   Whatever!

Grin I think Dennis Lover is a pretty cool name too.

Re: POB 3LP set [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Back in the olden days of the 70s and 80s it was said that colored vinyl was sonically inferior to standard black vinyl, so it surprises me a bit that POB is blue.

Is colored vinyl different than standard vinyl these days?
Was it ever?

I have the same experiences as the previous poster. I got white copies of Big Star's 'Radio City', and Jonathan Richman's 'Rock and Roll With...'. Both are superb.

Sounds like somebody programmed that song onto their closed circuit radio, which is piped to all the Walgreens throughout the country.

Re: The Beach Boys' Christmas Album [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I love it, for what it is. Its a totally 1960s pop album aimed at the widest possible holiday audience, so it can lean towards cheese. It's a bit like the "demo" mode on a synthesizer, which I mean in a good a way, shows off the bands vocal capability. And isn't the groove in Man With All The Toys the prototype for Here Comes The Night? I'd give it a 4 for most of the time, 5 annually each December.

Re: Big News - Mike Love records with Al Jardine [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 03 Nov 2008 12:09 AM CST

Yeah, people are bound to be a bit cynical about Mike's motives and rightly so, I'd say, given past events.

In some ways he's been very consistent in keeping a band called the Beach Boys as a touring entity. Unfreezing his various relationships with other original members may relate simply to ensuring continued success to this ongoing enterprise. As the critical praise has flowed so much towards Brian in recent years, he maybe feels that he is losing the PR battle and needs to add more music to his, er, day.

My feeling is that if a new incarnation of the BB as recording artists were to be driven mainly by AL, for the right reasons,  the results would be probably OK. Maybe no glory days, but probably OK.  I don't think they ever worked in a totally collaborative way so somebody would always be on top.

That would be nice Sheriff but isn't ML all about the mighty $$$?  It would be wonderful if they resurrected their friendship and musical partnership.  If Al is back in the band with Mike and Bruce, it has some validity again. Just add David and pray for the occasional Brian appearance.

Pardon me for asking, but is English your first, or even second, language ?  Or do you just have a severe comprehension problem ?

There's no confusion between the album track and the video track being under discussion; if you care to read my post again (or get someone to read it for you, and explain), I said I sent Bruce a link to the video, and that my source, who is one of the few people in the BB world I trust without question, told me that the video track is a mono fold-down of the 2007 recording. Seeing as you cannot evidently tell the difference between mono and stereo, I'd say your gut instinct is open to rigorous questioning, if not outright dismissal.

Yes, it does sound a lot like Bruce... but Mark says it isn't, Bruce says it isn't and above all simple logic says it isn't (aside from anything else, elements that are clearly from the 2007 track overlay it, so it's not a simple edit as some have claimed). But, as I said, can't make someone understand something they don't want to hear. The album track and the video track are the same recording, and Bruce isn't on it.

I can top allayas...

Some years ago in one of the local shops, they had a radio tuned to one of the local "music that won't offend your elderly relatives" kinds of radio stations.

I swear to God, I heard, from that radio: "Judy, Judy, Juuuudy boppa Judy...."

The woman behind the counter said that that station plays that song a lot for some reason...

New interviews with Brian, Scott Bennett and Mark Linett.

Thanks SRH.  I was hoping EQ (or MIX) would run a cover feature on the making of "TLOS", like EQ did for BWPS in '04.  I just wish one of them would've had a feature on "POB/Bambu".

well obviously.

This isn't directed to Mr. Doe, but listening to the Sendspace files again, you can call me stubborn but I have to agree with most of the posters here in saying that it sounds like Mr. Johnston. I have no connection with any BB related figures, but my ears think it's Johnston, my mind think's it's Johnston and my gut...well most of you can do the math. I admire Mr. Doe for his information but am disliking his personality.

Re: Going to see Brian (For the first time!)/autograph session!! [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 02 Nov 2008 06:58 PM CST

Just a little over a week now until the big show! I haven't been this excited for anything since the official release of SMiLE in '04.
My girlfriend made me a shirt for the autograph session that reads, "Solar system brings us wisdom". I initially wanted to have one that read, "Barnyard Billy loves his chickens", but thought that may be a little too obscure.
So is anyone else here going to the show on the 12th in Ann Arbor?
I'm usually a quiet guy in person, but i'm looking forward to meeting other Brian fans while i wait in the freezing cold at night, outiside of a bookstore, in another country, for the chance to meet Brian.

Ok, since this isn't helping us make friends...I suppose this will be my last post as well.

Here is the same part that Alan (Sloop John B) cut out, but from the actual 2007 recording.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/chzxzg

I folded it down to mono, just so that there is no difference between the recordings Alan posted and this one. You will notice two things: Foskett's part has a different rhythm than the original and the video snippet, and that Bennett is much more prominent. (Assuming thats him, IDK and frankly I dont care anymore! LOL)

Here are the snippets that Alan posted incase you missed them the first 10 times.
