Re: The Beach Boys [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 07:09 AM CDT You gotta be kidding. The Ramones have cited the early Beach Boys as one of their major influences over and over, and the proof is in the attitude and template of so many of their songs like Sheena and Rockaway Beach. Its tongue in cheek, its faster, but it so obvious, and way more garage than Spector ever was. Musicians often tend to name bands that they like as influences, even if they don't necessarily sound like them. And I definately hear way more Spector than Beach Boys influences in the Ramones' sound. But that's just my opinion then. And for the record: I played guitar in a Ramones cover band a few years ago, so I'm somewhat familiar with their music.
Re: Brian Vocally On L.A. [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 06:52 AM CDT If you read up to Page 68, the info is there. [C-man says] I can confirm that Carl said "Brian sang on 'Angel Come Home' and other background parts" (Time Barrier Express, 1979). When asked if Brian had any production input into the album Bruce said it was "More vocally", and Carl said "It was more performance this time", and then Bruce said "On 'Angel Come Home' it's mostly three-part harmony...until the choruses, then we added Mike". An article published right around the same time in "Grooves" Magazine said "Brian's only real contribution to the new album has been his singing on a few tracks". In that article, Carl said "Bruce and I had a lot of fun doing the background parts in Japanese" (on "Sumahama"), which might imply Brian in NOT on that one. However I can also confirm that Bruce said Brian did NOT sing on "Good Timin'" (in another interview around 1995 or so, and I think he said it was b/c Brian was in the hospital at the time), and we know that he isn't on "Here Comes The Night" despite the fact that Bruce intended to get him on the high part. I can confirm that Bobby Figueroa said he did a lot of vocal work on the album with Carl. And I can't confirm it, but I'm pretty sure Brian sang on "Shortenin' Bread" since they reportedly did the vocals in Miami. Oh, and that ThomasOgg guy...Oy!
Re: The 80 min. Compilation CD [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 06:27 AM CDT There are some early beautiful REM songs. I'll list what in my opinion were the best. Wolves, Lower, Gardening at Night Radio Free Europe Talk About the Passion Sitting Still Haborcoat So. Central Rain Pretty Persuasion Rockville Driver 8 Maps and Legends Life and How to Live It Fall On Me Cuyohoga Swan Swan H Superman The One I Love Disturbance at the Heron House Exhuming McCarthy King of Birds World Leader Pretend I Could Turn You Inside Out You Are My Everything Try Not to Breath Sweetness Follows Find the River Nightswimming These are not a mixed tape so aren't necessarily in a proper playing order, but rather their very best songs 83-92, in my opinion in more or less chrnological order. I think that Pretty much all their albums are good though I'm not a big fan of their post 92 stuff.
Re: Holland [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 05:34 AM CDT Nice album, in some way their most "seventies" album. I'll give it a five. The poem thing is cheesey, but the music behind it is great and somehow there's nothing that captures the time(as I remember it) better than that track. I just wish the poet had had a slightly better grasp on narrative tenses, but that's the pedant in me.
Re: Carl And The Passions- So Tough [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 05:23 AM CDT Funny, I've heard a lot of criticism about how the album doesn't hang together, but it does for me. I like every song on it. It's true that the Chaplin-Fataar parts don't sound like the beach Boys, but hell, neither does anything else on the album. They are still great songs that I probably would have never owned or heard if it hadn't had the Beach Boys name attached to it. Not as good as Holland over all, and could use a few lighter songs, but I liked it a lot.

Re: Smiley Smile [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 05:12 AM CDT Hmmm...Getting Hungry is one my favorite songs on the album. I love that organ. Having just heard the CD for the first time, I think it might be my favorite BB's album, or in the top five anyway. She's Going Bald me is ridiculously dated, but hte rest of it literally sounds fresher and more modern than even the original Smile recordings(which are brilliant and timeless but have a sort of sixties thing going). I love the minimalism of it.
Re: Classic Rock. [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 05:04 AM CDT I don't know. My only problem with classic rock is actually classic rock radio. It tends to play the same handful of songs from teh same bands over and over and over and over again. I mean, it pretty much hasn't changed for decades. You can get sick of it. There's something heavy and weary and a bit depressing about a lot of seventies guitar-heavy pre-punk bands(which is what I guess is meant by "Classic Rock"), from the Eagles to Fleetwood Mac to Lynard Skynard. But thosewere the times, and that was how the wind was blowing and in truth sometimes I feel like that--weary, heavy, a bit depressing. I do find classic rock staples like Pink Floyd a bit tiresome--on the other hand, sometimes I really like them. Classic rock--the music, the vibe and all is not my favorite music but sometimes it hits the spot. It's sort of like a favorite dive bar that you go into once in a blue moon for something different.

Re: \ [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 02:09 AM CDT I wouldn't be too surprised if there is an excellent multi-track recording in the vaults. there was a lot recorded for the "In concert"-album and maybe "River song" was in one of those concerts... The two live versions I have are from the Nassau Coliseum, and Hartford CT. Both shows were professionally recorded.

Kokomo Spanish Version [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 01:35 AM CDT I just heard this version for the first time very recently. I understand that Brian is in the mix and he seems audible. My question is, after the controversy that Landy wouldn't allow Brian to be a part of the song at the time, did something change when it came time to record the Spanish vesion? Was it released around the same time period? Gracias!

Re: The Beach Boys [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 12:47 AM CDT I am not into punk myself, but I would have to admit that the Ramones are good. But I can only take so much of that stuff. Its all short and simple. Its not like the Beach Boys (65-73), Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2 or Radiohead where you can listen a million times and still find something new. In fact I can only take so much of the Beach Boys (61-64)!

Re: first reaction when seeing this clip [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 May 2008 12:23 AM CDT Also, Andrew- something I've always wondered, and you might know- do any of those "Brian's Dad" buttons still exist on the earth? I know of one, but that was a good few years ago. If it survived until recently, it's got to still exist. That must be one of the all-time Beach Boys Holy Grail collectibles. Figured you'd know if anyone did. Thanks for the response. I think the ultimate collectible would be an unopened packet of the potato chips given away with the Party album in some record stores.
