Re: BW 88 studio talk [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I remember reading, I think it was in the Timothy White book, about how there was supposedly an entirely alternate mix done for the whole album spearheaded by Landy, which nobody seemed to like. I've always wondered if the sort of overly-hot, more sort of muddy mix of "Let It Shine" accidentaly used on the 2000 remaster was perhaps that supposed "Landy" version. Probably not, and that whole story of the a "Landy Mix" seemed kind of vague anyway.

I've also always wondered if there truly was an alternate version of "Sherry She Needs Me" cut during those '88 sessions as "Terri She Needs Me", and if so, what it might have sounded like.

Don't know what it sounds like, but it definitely happened...check out the story and the links on the below site...great info about the mixdown sessions for that album.  One of the links displays photos of Hit Factory rough mix cassette inlay cards, and "Terri She Needs Me" is one of the titles listed:

Has anyone ever considered that "All Day" was the "piano piece" for Air that wasn't finished? For some reason this seems to make the most sense, unless....

.....it's a piano track on a Heroes and Villains session from 1966 which appeared on a little-circulated bootleg which has been going around, albeit, a little.

Yes and no.
First, I don't think that piano piece ever existed and that it was just one of Brian's many 'who cares' interview answers.
On the other hand, "All Day" was rerecorded with air instruments in May 1967 during the "Love To Say Dada" sessions. So, "All Day" became an air-song, although the water arrangement is more known of course.
Piano piece could also be the "Long, long ago" / "Whisperin' winds" parts before "Wind Chimes".

What about the Dada session that moves into a CIFOTM-style piano piece before breaking down after about 5 seconds.? I posted about it here before and someone suggested it actually was part 3 of Dada that Brian was intending to record but obviously the entire smile project went t**s up before the session. Maybe this part 3 was air?!! It is certainly another paino piece and is as viable (or unlikely) as any of the other options imo.

I think I have that part somewhere but I am not sure. I have only seen the medley because if I do have the segement it's on a seperate DVD. Brian seems to be laughing at how silly it is, Mike is twisting and turning like he is having a spasm, Dennis almost falls off his stool. Strange stuff.

According to a Peter Dogget article in Record Collector, they did record a studio medley that CBS rejected. I think it was implied that it was awful. Maybe one of those Mike solo deals.

I understand there were a few different edits too. Wish it was going around.

A locals (not tourists) bar in a building that I believe survived the 1933 Long beach earthquake.  Very friendly place in an interestig older neighborhood with an adjoining mexican food resturant that serves late.  When I walk out of there I feel like the next car coming around the corner will probably be a Hudson Hornet, if that makes any sense.

There are alot of things I really like about this album. It's got plenty of personality. I love Mike's between-song patter... reminds me of the Kingston Trio's "from the Hungry i" album in that aspect. I like that they do songs like Aren't You Glad and Wake the World. Good Vibrations is really cool. I love the vocals on this - they sound real and raw but still great. I wish they had done more songs from Friends, though.

And although it's kinda cool in a way, I think it's silly that the band can't/won't play the intro to California Girls or the slow bit at the end of Wouldn't it Be Nice. And the guitar on Bluebirds is so weak compared to the studio version.

4/5

MAD was originally a rock song? I'm trying to imagine it twice as fast and with electric guitars... I think it's better the way it is.

Virtually all the BW songs in TLOS are new, as in written since the release of Smile in 04. As I understand it.

Breaks down like such:

That Lucky Old Sun (cover version, newly arranged by BW 06-07)
Morning Beat (new, although certainly based on the Shortnin' Bread riff. Includes the Hallalujah riff from the 70s).
Good Kind of Love (summer 06, I believe AGD mentioned this was worked on with Carole King)
Forever My Surfer Girl (new)
Live Let Live (new; has so far featured two distinct sets of lyrics -- I also recall hearing that this has been recorded as a duet with Carole King)
Mexican Girl (new)
California Role (written in the mid-80s as "Wondering What You're Up to Now." Obviously rewritten with new lyrics)
Been Way Too Long (mid 60s, of course)
Oxygen (This was written soon after Smile was released -- I read an interview with Brian from 04 or 05 in which he mentioned this song).
Midnight's Another Day (from the summer 06 sessions -- apparently Scott helped rework this from a rock song that Brian was working on)
Going Home (new, not to be confused with the Paley sessions tune of the same title. Shortnin' Bread again.)
Southern California (apparently a Scott tune, although clearly written with BW in mind).

Really looking forward to the record. I don't care if some of it was written years ago as That Lucky Old Sun as a whole seems like such a coherent and spirited piece of work to me. Dick Reising and the guys at Capitol seem to feel that way too.

Is this the Dick Reising of Bull Sessions fame?  I always thought that was a joke...
or are you joking yourself?

Has there been any date decided for the Stomp Convention this year? If anyone knows please could they let me know as I need to book the time off work!

Are there also any other details - guest, location (rumours that it may not be Greenford this year) etc

Cheers, Zander

Back on the topic of "Kick," I remember my mom telling me that she thought Michael Hutchence looked and sounded like Mick Jagger when I was a kid. She didn't know who INXS were... just saw me watching a video on MTV. I think it might have been "Devil Inside" or "Suicide Blonde." It's been so long since I've seen those videos, I have no idea what they even look like. But it's pretty rare to find those singers that can be cool and exude a non-athletic sexuality, yet at the same time come off as totally masculine. Whatever that means... I thought Michael Hutchence was a cool guy.

Ugh...that medley may have been the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.  Why would they agree lip synch to the release at any time, let alone  twenty years after the fact?  Didn't they know how bad that was going to be?  Or think that anyone would notice?

As someone else mentioned, it seems like "American Bandstand" was very firm about only doing lip-synching. They also probably chose to mime to that medley because it was a recent "hit". Didn't that medley hit like the Top 10 or 20 around that time?

It is one of the more odd BB TV appearances. Dennis looks about the worst he ever had, at least as far as TV appearances. The whole thing was just odd. Circa 1981 Carl-less Beach Boys miming to the "Party" version of "Barbara Ann", 1981 Brian miming to Carl's lead vocal on "Good Vibrations." Weird stuff.

My favorite part of that show was the "all star jam" at the end to "Rock Around the Clock." Since Carl as the normal lead guitarist wasn't there, Al had to "represent" the BB's on stage for the song. They start by announcing each "band member" and having them come on stage, and it's pretty funny when they call out Al Jardine to come on stage, he's in the middle of sipping his drink and acts surprised and has to put it down and come on stage. Then, during the song, they let most of the musicians take a solo and Al's is hilariously dreadful. Strangely, even though the BB's were never a heavy guitar band, and Al was never even the lead guitarist, he actually was and/or is capable of playing those leads. I saw him in 2005 playing spot-on leads on songs like "Fun Fun Fun" and "409." But for whatever reason, his solo on "Rock Around the Clock" was a miss. But it's really funny, and you can see the look on Al's face like he knows he blew the solo. Smiley

I've probably related this story several times in the past in old threads on this topic, but one interesting thing about "An American Band" is the alternate mixes of 60's Capitol studio tracks in the documentary. As I remember the story, they originally cut the film with the standard Capitol mixes/masters used for those tracks (and that version was the version seen/heard in apparently very limited theatrical screenings). But then they found they weren't allowed to use the actual final Capitol mixes/masters. They could still use the tracks, just not Capitol's mixes. So this is why all of the 60's Capitol tracks have such noticeably different mixes. It seems they specifically mixed the songs to sound noticeably different to display/prove that they weren't using the standard Capitol mixes. This is probably also why they subtituted a few live tracks in as well for early tracks like "409", where it sounds like they used some sort of early 80's live recording because they didn't have any multitrack to do a remix of the original studio version.

I don't know the exact location. My pal Sam took me there a few years ago, and it was really cool. We just sat there thinking about how this culture really could thrive again, if there were ever a revival in rhythm & blues and jazz. I've been thinking it was going to come on strong since DJ Shadow and Beck and that Dap-Tone stuff, but it's not really hit the mainstream yet. Amy Winehouse is getting closer. But it would be amazing if the music started hitting at a club level down on Central. I don't care about neighborhood condition... if the music drew me time and again, I wouldn't be able to help myself.

That's the one thing about World Stage. It's cool, but always felt a little clinical to me. The museum feel is, I suppose, the only way to keep it going. But the seediness is missing. Damn if I didn't almost book the Flying Fox before it closed. If you go on the Dumb Angel Magazine blog, we did one on the Crenshaw District, and met with Jerry from the Flying Fox. He was totally up for booking Plas Johnson with Joey Altruda's band, and having some hardcore burlesque in the club. I got so busy writng two books that I drug my feet on booking the event. Arg...

What's the Long Beach place called?

Wooing Brian Wilson [Smiley Smile Dot Net]

A "sentimental" Brian Wilson describes how he feels about returning to Capitol Records:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) - Brian Wilson will release his first album in more than three years in September, a project that marks his return to Capitol Records, the label where he gained fame with the Beach Boys during the 1960s.

"That Lucky Old Sun" will come out in the United States on September 2, and a day earlier internationally, Wilson and Capitol announced on Monday during a news conference at the label's historic tower in Hollywood.

"It's a great honor to be here and a very sentimental time in my life," said Wilson, 65, looking relatively healthy in a striped polo shirt, faded jeans and slip-on tennis shoes. "I haven't recorded here in 46 years, almost half a century that I haven't recorded here. Ha!"

Described by Capitol as "a musical love letter from Southern California," the new album features 11 songs punctuated by spoken-word narratives describing life in Los Angeles.

Wilson said he had been working on the album for about two years, with lyricists Van Dyke Parks and Scott Bennett, and he recorded it with his longtime backing band.

A Wilson spokeswoman said he was wooed by six labels, but that Capitol was the most enthusiastic. The parties shook hands on a deal about three weeks ago, she said.
