For Mr. Moore: Port To Paradise [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 29 May 2008 02:48 AM CDT This question is for Mark A. Moore. I had a few questions about the Jan & Dean cassette-only album "Port To Paradise". First of all, was this strictly a Jan Berry solo project? If so, was it mainly a collection of remixes of his 70's singles with some brand new recordings thrown into the mix? How involved was Dean in the final product.? How close did "Ocean Park Angel" get to being released as the Jan & Dean "comeback" single? Thanks in advance for attempting to clear up a very grey area in J&D history! Ben |

Re: DW Samples [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 29 May 2008 02:17 AM CDT Jon, He's A Bum on the reissue....is this the same recording as the circulating version with a better mix, or is it a different session? I believe the version going around was Dennis' rough demo version, the one David Leaf talked about in one of his articles as having performed on at Dennis' invitation. |
Jan [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 29 May 2008 01:06 AM CDT New comp from Collectors' Choice Music . . . In MONO . . . a good step in the right direction for Jan & Dean re-issues. Here's the link: http://www.ccmusic.com/item.cfm?itemid=CCM09492 Mark M. |
Re: DW Samples [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 29 May 2008 12:58 AM CDT Jon, Ed Roach mentioned he had some tapes of Dennis' own mixes of certain songs. Do Dennis' mixes still exist? There are some alternate mixes of POB tracks, don't really know if these are Dennis' own mixes...maybe Alan Boyd could illuminate the specifics. I know Ed has some ancient reference cassettes which contain alternate mixes. There's a lot of alternate takes and other material in the can. Perhaps a sessions type of release will happen some day. |

Re: Muscle Beach Party [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 28 May 2008 09:35 PM CDT The Super Stocks versions of "Muscle Beach Party" and "My First Love" on their Surf Route 101 LP use the same backing tracks as the movie versions. "Surfer's Holiday" was an outtake from that LP, and also uses the same backing track as the movie including the Dick Dale guitar solo (which may explain why it didn't make the Super Stocks' LP, if they couldn't get Dale's permission to use his solo). "Muscle Bustle" by Donna Loren on the Challenge label is actually a re-recording in a higher key, but otherwise is very similar to the movie version. An acetate of the movie version featuring the Dick Dale / Donna Loren duet was up for auction on eBay about 8 years ago, being sold by Loren's brother if I recall. It's a full take without the annoying crowd overdubs, ending in a fade-out. Lee |
Re: a SMiLE question or 3 [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 28 May 2008 09:25 PM CDT What did Carl say? "...at the last take Brian said, 'I want to put another instrument on the low end, what can I use?' I blurted out 'cello', and that was the word that wanted to be said." |

Re: a SMiLE question or 3 [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 28 May 2008 07:19 PM CDT He has claimed to have made arrangement suggestions. That could be true, I know he suggested the cello triplets in "Good Vibrations". He SAYS he suggested the cello triplets in "Good Vibrations"...but so did Carl. |

Re: Art That Shook The World: Pet Sounds [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 28 May 2008 07:13 PM CDT "Trombone Dixie" with guide vocal: Wheeew...in the neighbour's pool. "In My Childhood": Wheew...somewhere on a tree. I don't wanna know what he did with his SMiLE acetates. I know it's so sad- I totally agree with you, but the way you say it makes it even funnier...I mean there's no going back so you just have to imagine Brian winging one of them at Mike Love's head just for the hell of it.... |

Re: Brian Wilson tour programme 2005 ?? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 28 May 2008 06:10 PM CDT As Seymour from "Ghost World" said: "I have to admit that things are really starting to look up for me since my life turned to merda." Just kidding. Alas, yes, I wrote and researched the program. My only solace is that Mark London himself didn't get a hardbound copy either... I just asked him. But I don't know if they cut my writing from the hardbound or what. The person who put it up on eBay suggested that David Leaf was at the helm, so maybe they replaced the essay that I had in the softbound version. Without seeing an actual copy, I can't say. Either way, I got paid to do it, and recieved a stack of softbound copies, so I'm not going to get all bitter here. |

Re: Big Bag of Vegetables 9-disk set??? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 28 May 2008 05:31 PM CDT The January sessions for "Surf's Up" were labeled as tracking for Part 2. Apparently there are some verse vocals for "CITFOTM" that can barely be heard bleeding through a recorded playback. That being said, there were enough sessions for "CITFOTM" to hypothetsize that there likely were vocal sessions for the verses. But it's just a guess. |
