But Van Dyke said that Brian played him the verse melody, he asked him to play it again and he came up immediately with  "I've been in this town so long . . . "  which to me means the melody was already in place when they collaborated.  Unless you're saying when they got together, inspiration struck Brian and he invented and played the melody to Van Dyke at the same time . . . a bit of a stretch I think.  Van Dyke has said that Brian came up with the music, then he would do the lyrics, and the music was all Brian's - although I suspect Van Dyke had more input on the music than he lets on.

It's been a while since I last watched the 'Beautiful Dreamer' DVD. I checked it out again yesterday and yes, I mixed a few things up and it's possible that Brian already had the verse melody. I too think that Parks cowrote some of the music.

Van Dyke has always categorically denied that he wrote any of the SMiLE music.  He has said, more than once, that he was in the employment of Brian Wilson, and his job was to write lyrics.  That's how he saw it and that's how he approached it.

Brian May talks Dennis! [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Brian Mays soapbox blog;

http://www.brianmay.com/whatsnew.html

On the entry for the 24th May (and 20th May), Brian talks about the 'Holy Man' track with Taylor Hawkins. I would have copied it here but he gets mad about things like that and I don't want to incur his wrath!

"Trombone Dixie" with guide vocal: Wheeew...in the neighbour's pool.
"In My Childhood": Wheew...somewhere on a tree.
I don't wanna know what he did with his SMiLE acetates.

I think this is a return to form on some of the songs

Dreamin', Angel and the One, Pork and Beans   are great, Greatest Man and Troublemaker are ok (don't like the rappin though).

All the other songs are mediocre and badly produced.  This is comming from a boy who loves Weezer and sees their decline as something wrong. I know Rivers can write good songs, I know Weezer can produce and arrange a masterpiece. But somehow I think their label only wants them to ship millions of units and they are happy to jump on the bandwagon of US MOR Rock.

Heart Songs and Everybody Get Dangerous are ok songs, but there's nothing original about them, nothing authentic one sounds like  Boys 2 Men the other like a bad-RHCP.

There is some talk about album 7 to be recorded at the end of this year, fingers crossed.

my ranking:
Pinkerton
Blue
Green
Maladriot
Red
Make Believe

Nice docu, but it breaks my heart to hear that Brian played frisbee with his Pet Sounds acetates.

FYI - most, if not all, of the home footage you see in ATSTW was originally broadcast in 1999 on A & E's "Biography" of Brian - probably the best documentary I've seen of Brian / Beach Boys. You can purchase a used copy from amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/Biography-Brian-Wilson-Marnie-Blok/dp/0767020545/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=video&qid=1211941340&sr=1-5

I only wish it was out on DVD!

Incidentally, anyone seen that youtube video from 1991?  Brian's at a party and he does "Surfer Girl" and he pretty nearly nails it, high voice and all.  It's kind of shocking.

I just went to youtube and found this and wow ... that's pretty incredible.

Here's the link BTW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a6rkWWFyck

Yeah I've seen that before actually...he sounded fantastic.  I think there's a clip of him doing "Caroline, No" from the same period where he nails the bridge and the final "nooooooo".

Yeah, the same guy has the clip but he hasn't uploaded it yet for some reason.

Too bad, because that Caroline No performance is out of this world.

Re: BBC 'Bambu: Lost Albums' Doc. [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 27 May 2008 06:07 PM CDT

Just heard this doc and wondered if the link had been posted here. I have not been disappointed: nice work Luke!

Pete Paphides (now chief rock critic with The Times - apparently) gives a very positive assessment of Dennis Wilson's legacy, even if he calls "Fifth of July" one of the great Dennis Wilson contributions to the Beach Boys! (I don't even consider myself a first division BB fan and I still get a snobbish kick out of spotting mistakes like this). Good to hear the actual voices of family, friends and associates. I still wonder to what extent Bambu was ever really considered an album project as opposed to a bunch of occasional sessions (the doc leaves this kinda vague).

Anyway, it looks like Dennis Wilson is  getting a lot of attention this summer. And this can only be a good thing. I can't wait for the POB reissue. Haven't been this excited since August '04!

Fifth of July...probably a British thing... Wink

I think Dennis had a two-record deal with Caribou, and a follow-up to POB was definitely expected.  It just dragged on and on with no end in sight due to his personal problems.

The show was first broadcast on 20 July 2002. I don't think it has ever seen a DVD/Video release. It's generally a fine documentary although Mark Lamaar; a big fan of Brian Wilson by all accounts, seems surprisingly ignorant of Brian's work after Pet Sounds. The home movie footage is excellent.

 Cool

Re: Velvet Underground fans... [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Well, yeah I'm pretty sure we figured that out. What we need to figure out if its a cover or some sort of 'remake' of a song, and which one, or maybe a song by a band influenced by VU.

I think its gonna just end up being part of the original score, which if thats the case, who knows if we'll ever get to hear the whole thing (if more exists beside whats in the scene).
Hey, don't get sassy, chief. Anyway, if it's a cover, it's not a close one. It's vaguely VUish, probably by nobody in particular. (Like when Lou Reed was writing surfin' music for Pickwick, for example...)

Although it's not a song, per se, don't forget about "Bull Session With 'Big Daddy'".

"Well, uh...are we on...?"

Re: Which bands do you own a COMPLETE discography for? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 27 May 2008 04:12 PM CDT

See, that's just it: Sunshine Fix and Circulatory System, that's easy. But start chasing down the other dozen or so people's other bands, and then realizing they branch out into however many others ad infinitum... The Instruments, by the way, just released a new album, Dark Smaland. (Heather McIntosh leading a group with a few OTCers) Jeff Mangum sings prominent harmonies on a few tracks, as he has done for them on other albums.

Definitely not a VU recording.
