Discs 10 - 12:

Identical to the SOT material (bar slightly alternate playing sequence due to disc space) with the additional tracks on Disc 12:

Track 31. Good Vibrations (chello and tannerin isolted) *fan edit
Track 32. Good Vibrations instrumental backing track

Great article on Dennis [Smiley Smile Message Board]

...by veteran UK BB commentator Richard Williams. I still remember (probably still have) the classic review he wrote of the Surf's Up LP in The (London) Times, 1971.

Weezer - Red Album [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 24 May 2008 12:54 AM CDT

Just so you know, I use to be a major Weezer fan ever since I saw the premiere of Undone on MTV. It was pretty sickening to be honest, everything about me revolved around Weezer for the next 6 or so years. I was made fun of but whatever, haters to the left.

Anyway...

What would normally be a major FAIL, Im thoroughly surprised by their new album. Patrick Wilson was wrong in saying that fans of the Blue Album/Pinkerton will be happy with the outcome of this album, because IMO its still missing a pivotal role (coughcoughmattsharpcough) but I will agree that its much better than everything else they came out with since the Pink.

Has anyone else heard any of the songs? Im gonna pick up the deluxe cd when its released, its gonna be the first weezer album I buy since Pinkerton.

I don't know about that...most of it is pretty simple, but like I said, that key change in the bridge where it ends with Eb as the tonic then goes back to Ab isn't something your average songwriter would come up with, let alone Mike Love (who as far as I know hadn't written any music for the BB at that point).  It just doesn't make sense, unless maybe Mike came up with the main verse music but Brian did the bridge...that I might be able to buy.

I do remember hearing - perhaps even from AGD - on one of the boards that Mike wrote the verse and Brian wrote the bridge. But, who knows?

Re: Bob Dylan Thread [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Slightly surprised that he's sticking with "Summer Days", although I love the song.

That song is a monster live!!  I have seen Bob twice and he played it both times.  He really seems to get into that one.  Well, at least as much as Bob visually gets into anything that is.

Yeah, Dylan does get into it doesn't it; you could actually categorize it as dancing! police

Seriously, the song does rock, with Tony Garnier on the stand-up bass, and Denny Freeman wailing on guitar. Bob has played it at every concert so far on his 2008 spring/summer tour. Again, I'm a little surprised that it's one of the only songs he plays EVERY NIGHT. I mean, with his catalogue, I just find it interesting that he chose that one. It looks like "Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee" is back to stay also. That kinda rocks live, too.

I don't have the best ear for these things, but to me, Let the Wind Blow, is G7, C, C7 and Dm, Am for most of the song then Dm, G and Em, Bm and Em7, D/A for the bridge.

Maybe we need to start a definitive chord progression thread...

I think work continued on this record up to, like, 1974 or something.

I think it was done during the Sunflower era. The little snippit I heard is a little over the top, but some of it sounds interesting.

Late summer/fall 1969

Whomever puts it out would be wise to include isolated backing tracks for the few songs that have full BW orchestrations. Put those on there as bonus tracks.

Byron Preiss had this to say about the creation of "Let The Wind Blow":

"...one of Mike's most beautiful compositions.  Written while in his car, Mike took it to Brian, who changed the melody line, gave it a different beat, and went into the studio to record".
I never remember where I read these things, but from my understanding, Mike had written it as an upbeat R&B-styled track, which Brian then took and morphed it into what it was on the album. If Mike gets a composer's credit for arranging Mama Says, then Brian gets one for arranging Let the Wind Blow.

And the chords are pretty standard, I think. It's a lot less musically complicated than, say, Big Sur or Sumahama.

Is there much collector cachet/demand for the original vinyl US version of "Rarities"?
