Love the way the mouth organ is being used in Going Home. Unlike How Could We Still Be Dancin', Desert Drive et al, this song really does rock.

I recieved these recording a few weeks ago.My first impresion twas that it was a Love Song Suite to California with heavy Mt Vernon overtones.
I like the way it sound as is. No need to mess with it any more.IMHO

I reckon you should try having another listen - I believe you'll find its actually about the Wilson family, its relationaship with California (after all it did help create the image of California) and more importantly about Brian, his youth, his brothers and his redemption. Its far more than "a love song suite to California". Isolate the Californian songs (and narratives) from the rest and the songs then follow the timeline of the rest, the timeline is the key to the family/Brian story.

I wish there was a barf smiley. Half the songs on this record are great, the other half are like clipping an electric current to my nads and recording the sound as they fry.

I like it, the band sounds good, though I miss Brian's falsetto and Mike Love is fodaing irritating as all foda.

3/5. I don't listen to it too much.

I like it. I would have put 4th of July as the opening track. I will give it 5/5, though really more like 4.5. The good songs are great, and even SDT doesn't bother me that much in context, forced and unoriginal though it be. Not as good as Sunflower, or at least I don't like it as much, but holds together perhaps even better.

Re: Shut Down, Volume II [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Starts off really strong, but then falls flat on it's face. Dennis' Drums is probably my least favorite track--of all time, by any band. Louie Louie...yeah. I can just barely get into it, but come on.
Most of the other songs are cool, though. Warmth of the Sun is probably my favorite early Beach Boys track. Something really weird about it.

I burned this on CD and added other instrumentals that have been since released. It's not something I'll play for other people but there's something about it I like. At times it can be a revelation.
The record company just put it out, but us fans like it. And the Beach Boys have continued to put out similar things, on the Box Set on these compilations that have recently surfaced.
Ad mit it fans! The fact that they put out this stuff is part of why we like them. Perfect geek band.
I give it 3/5. Probably being generous, but screw it.

3/5, deductions because of the repeat tracks. Nothing really special here, there's no song that makes me think "Wow, that's amazing"--and there usually is at least one on most BB's albums before 1973. Nevertheless, I like it okay, though for me it's more enjoyable as a study of Brian's developing production talents(compare the production of Cherry Cherry Coupe with the nearly identical Land Ahoj--much beefier and more powerful) Also the fact that it's all about cars makes me laugh.

Re: All Summer Long [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Good record and the template for...what the Beach Boys are now. Some rockin' songs, some cool ballads. The only song I don't like is "Recording Sessiosn" but I made my own copy so I don't have to bother with skipping it. Oh, I don't get into Do You Remember, either. It seems more like an exercise to me than a song.

Can't get into it too much. 1/5

Re: Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I love the album and I'll give it 5/5, though I do think that Today and Pet Sounds were both better. I suppose this is the album(and Amusement Parks USA was the song) that made Brian want to try out other lyricists. Still even the two mediocre(IMO) songs--APUSA and Salt Lake City are very well produced. I wish it all could be in fresh stereo, but it's good the way it is.

Unbelievably ambitious and energetic. A gorgeous record, too. 5/5

Re: 20/20 [Smiley Smile Message Board]

There isn't a song on here that I don't like. Even Nearest Faraway Place is OK as an instrumental from one member of a band(though you'd have to pay me to listen to a whole album of that stuff.) AS one track in a career, it's interesting.
Do It Again, for some reason might be the only other track I feel so-so about, though I know I'm in a minority. Maybe it's because the Beach Boys became such a nostalgic band...if they had never done another nostalgic track I guess I'd like it a lot better-- a song hearkening back to their silly surf days with love. But since that's pretty much all they have done for the last twenty years it bothers me.
I think that Cabenessence and Our Prayer ARE out of place on the record, too, but they are such great songs and the album is so hodge-podge anyway that it doesn't bother me.
4/5

Re: Beach Boys' Party! [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 02 May 2008 12:38 AM CDT

I like the album, though I guess I would like it better with out the fake party. ON the other hand it's INTERESTING that it wasn't really a party as it gives it a sort of concept other than Beach Boys cover a bunch of song acoustically. Such a  concept isn't really necessary in my book, but it does give a bit of insight into Brian's mind.

3/10

One of their coolest albums, reminds me of a summer morning before it gets too hot. Transcendental Meditation is hilarious.
