Re: Overrated artists/albums [Smiley Smile Message Board]

The Beatles may be the best band ever, the way their talents came together was a once in a lifetime thing, most likely. Their perfect career arc, consistent good taste,  engaging personalities and forty years of extremely smart publicizing hasn't hurt any, either.

Then again, maybe they are just one of dozens of very, very good bands.

It might be true that Beach Boys fans on a Beach Boys website overrate the Beach Boys, but I certainly would not say the Beach Boys are overrated in general, either by critics or by normal humans. At worst they are one of the great sixties-early seventies bands if not "equal" to the Beatles on the "good-o-meter" at least the equal to the Kinks, Stones, Who, etc.

The Beach Boys are underrated as far as I am concerned.

I kind of disagree that the Beach Boys only made one record as good as any of those others. I think that Wild Honey, Friends are equal to the White Album(though strikingly different, obviously), and 20/20 is better than Let It Be. Sunflower is as good as Abbey Road as far as I am concerned and I think the Reilly-era albums are also great.
I think that Today is better than Help! and Summer Days is not too far below Rubber Soul. Smiley might not be equal to SGT. Pepper or MMT but to be honest, I'd rather hear that nowadays than either of those. I guess I'm Beatled out.

As far as their early stuff, I think they are about equal, but I think that Brian Wilson was a better producer than George Martin(in the early sixties). "Little Child", "Hold Me Tight" and many others are just as much filler as "South Bay Surfers"(If not" Denny's Drums", IMO.

Sarcasm aside, I completely agree with you about Amusement Parks USA. I wouldn't call it "milking the ASL formula", but it is very, um, formulaic. Typical completely non-unique pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys track.

OK, OK, I already said that I was wrong.

At any rate, though, there is something not quite fresh about that track, even though I listened to it last night and I actually thought it kicked ass. In fact, I would say that the first three tracks of that record are the worst ones...though the rest are brilliant. It's the lyrics that bug me. I still like them though.

This is all, of course In my humble opinion, upon which, of course, you are more than free to heap scorn.

My original comment stands.  This is the album that made Brian Wilson seek out new lyricists. I dont think that Mike wrote much of the lyrics to Let Him Run Wild or You're So Good to Me--those sound about 80 percent Brian to me, not that it matters or that any of us know exactly who imputted what. Whatevah, I still give the album five/five.

Yeah, Mike was really milkin' that All Summer Long formula. The kids couldn't identify with "Dance, Dance, Dance" or "Help Me Rhonda" or any of that other beatnik acid burnout crap, so it was time for an Amusement Parks USA or two to bring the band back to that commercial peak. If it wasn't for him, Brian would've let the whole album turn into 12 tracks of Let Him Run Wild and You're So Good to Me and all that other anti-society hippy dippy collection of ego nonsense sounds.

I've got both albums and I definitely recommend them!

I'm broke, don't have a dollar to my name, but if I had 4 dollars, I'd buy food.  If I had 5, I'd buy food and DKN.

And I'll add my recommendation for Long Promised Road.  It's a loving tribute to a couple of great people...performed by a bunch of great people.

Am I missing something that talks about this coming to DVD?  Last I emailed Denny he was still looking for a distributor.

Denny sent me an early cut of the film.

I spoke to Mike Deasy recently . . . and he was getting ready to go to Nashville for the film festival.

Luther -- I don't think that's the case -- I was just trying to play AGD's little puzzle -- why would the material be leaked? What's the purpose? He seems to suggest that there's a fairly obvious reason (aside from BW's inner circle letting it out for their own purposes). I was trying to figure it out. Perplexing.

Such a deal!!

To anyone reading who has not yet purchased these albums:  Please buy these albums.

I've spent many hours in Adam's garage, and I can attest to the fact that these CDs are taking up a lot of valuable space that could be more efficiently used for other things, like musicians.  And instruments.  And garden tools.

Also:  These CDs are quite good.  I'm not just saying that because I happen to be on them.

Plus:  Where else are you going to hear Evie Sands sing "Trader"?  Or Adam singing "Moonshine"?   Or ANYONE singing "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again" and "Carry Me Home"Huh

Finally:  If you already bought and enjoyed LONG PROMISED ROAD, you really, really should get DAYLIGHT KISSING NIGHT, because it's really, really good.  There's a wide range of styles showcasing all of Adam's best stuff, everything from bad-ass yet melodic power pop with cynical but humorous punk attitude... to reflective ballads with gorgeous vocals (there's one song on there called "Portland," which would have been a highlight on the LA Light Album if only a Wilson had written it 30 years ago).

Thank you.

Alan

That, or some band member is trying to sabotage the commercial release -- but why would anyone do that?

How would leaked demos affect eventual sales of material?  The "Free As a Bird" demo was available, yet Beatles' Anthology I certainly sold well. It's not like someone leaked the actual album--that hasn't even been (completely) recorded yet. The only way it would hurt sales would be if the songs sucked so badly that people decided not to buy, as opposed to being disappointed by an eventual release of those terrible songs. And in the case of TLOS, that isn't true--the songs are generally really good.

Well, whatever the reason for these things being leaked, they at least have the benefit of making the project seem exciting. Brian sounds with it and was obviously involved in playing instruments and singing leads and backgrounds. Add some strong material, and there's a strong case for the suite.

To my mind, this kind of leak just pressures the BW camp to release something already. That, or some band member is trying to sabotage the commercial release -- but why would anyone do that?

Excellent. I'll get this into the format right now. Thanks.

Lavender - Are all five 1962 Beach Boys singing there? Or is David silent? Is Al there?

For my cd, I added Brian's  'Heaven" as a bonus track and then  "TLOS"  live in London . About 73 minutes.  I am one happy camper right now as this will get me thru till POB/Bambu, Then the reissue of 'The Real Beach Boy', Then 'PostCard',  then the studio version of "TLOS'.  2008 is shaping up to be a very good year!

Seeing as Brian's people were spitting feathers and pitching blue fits about the demos being 'out there',
Gee AGD, I missed the Melinda Wilson/David Leaf thread where they posted their unhappiness.  I for one, as a BB 'outsider' fan, find it a bit tiresome where 'insiders' come up with these things after the fact; or claim to have insider knowledge on goings on but can't divulge the facts (IE: Al Jardine not going on Brian's UK tour).  From hearing them, I think Susan is right that the tracks were put together for band members to learn the songs.  But it is naive to think, after making disks for so many people, that they wouldn't get out there.  Do you have any actual Mel quotes??? Nothing on the Blue Board.

With all due respect to you, by the way, AGD.   (I am just dying to find out why Al didn't tour)

I still can't believe they got out.

You can't? I'd be a lot more surprised if they hadn't gotten out.

Re: Overrated artists/albums [Smiley Smile Message Board]

The Beatles may be overrated, but if I say that it's not a slight to them, but the idiots who too-highly rate anything, making it out to be unrealistic perfection. But I still strongly believe they're the best band there ever was in pop music. They consistently made the best records of any band that has ever been. I am glad they broke up when they did, because it means I can always wish there were more to hear. The Beach Boys, to my ears, had one--ONE--album that was as good from start to finish as the Beatles best albums: Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road. And that's Pet Sounds. The other albums all have a lot of fine moments, but often as much filler. I'd take Magical Mystery Tour (which I think of as probably the Beatles worst album) over almost any Beach Boys album.

In fact, I think around here (for obvious reasons, being as it's a Beach Boys board) the Beach Boys are the most overrated band.
