Re: Alternate Universe Beach Boys: What if David never quit? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 12 May 2008 06:56 AM CDT Would he have been the first non Wilson-Love composer (not counting instrumentals)? Would "Our Car Club" have been replaced by "Kustom Kar Show" on LDC? Would "Cruisin'" have made sure we never would have been subjected to "Cassius Love" on Shut Down 2? Or would a Brian who could stay at home cooked up something even better? Would "I Wanna Cry" have replaced "Bull Session" on the second side of "Today!"? |
Re: Alternate Universe Beach Boys: What if David never quit? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 12 May 2008 06:53 AM CDT Only thing I feel really sure about is that if he had stayed in the band this thread would be about Al, and we'd be saying "Maybe he'd have brought more of a Dylan feel to the band, as well as better dental awareness..." HAHA! Great post all round, but this really tickled me. No, you'd have to have Al too, like on the Surfer Girl / Little Deuce Coupe albums. The perfect six-man line-up. |

Re: Alternate Universe Beach Boys: What if David never quit? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 12 May 2008 04:16 AM CDT This is one of those giant questions that no one can answer, or no two people will answer alike. Dito But I guess the question is, if Dave would've had time enough to grow on the guitar as he had without the Beach Boys..... |
Re: Overrated artists/albums [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 12 May 2008 03:25 AM CDT I don't mean to be trouble for anybody but I kind of think the whole idea of "objectivity" with popular music is more or less BS in my opinion. Also, why would anybody WANT to be objective anyway? I mean, what are the criteria and how do you measure it other than subjectively? The only real objective measure is record sales, which of course is no way to judge an artist. I can see someone saying the Beatles were a more well-rounded band, insofar as they had more than one very good or great songwriter, they had a great lead guitarist and drummer i.e., they had a greater arsenal of "weapons" than the Beach Boys who were perhaps limited by Wilson's vision(even though they were also totally dependent on it.) They were able to do more styles of music, from country/rockabilly to hard-edged r'n'b to sheer hard rock. But that's stupid. Who listens to an album and says, for example, why didn't they stick a really hard-rockin' Helter Skelter style song here? I just dont' get that.. I have no problems with someone saying "The Beatles were a greater band than the Beach Boys." Heck, I might even agree. What i don't get is someone saying "objectively the Beatles were a better band than the Beach Boys. To reiterate: what instrument measures that? I could also see someone saying that the Beatles were able to realize their potential to a greater extent and they definitely had far, far greater taste than the Beach boys but I really am going to a)disagree that the Beatles mid-to-late sixties output was that much better than the Beach Boys b) call the idea that "objectively" say, Abbey Road is better than, say, Sunflower pure bullmerda. I want to stress that I'm not looking for any rancorous arguments here and I have a great respect for nearly all the posters on this board but opinions are opinions as we would all agree and to pass them off as something objective is, well, kind of pretentious. Regarding the question of "filler"--I think that in the early sixties both bands had "filler" I can list them by the Beatles: Hold Me Tight, Little Child, Devil In Her Heart, When I Get Home, ANytime at all(IMHO), I Only Want To Dance With You, half of HELP(IMHO), Wait, Run For Your Life. Each of those songs has something going for them, I reckon--with the exception of I Only Want to Dance With You and the Harrison songs on Help!--but so do much of the Beach Boys filler--with the exception, maybe of Denny's Drums and the "skits"--even the skits, I think were probably more a product of BW's weird sense of humor and strange taste(the same taste that compelled him to make a "Party" album that was totally faked. I do skip the skits and I do skip Denny's Drums, but that's about it. I also skip the filler on Beatle's records. AS far as their late sixties and early seventies stuff, I really don't hear much of what I would call "filler"--I'm not a big fan of "Add Some Music" or "The Nearest Faraway Place", but I don't know if I would call it "filler" in the sense that I don't think that it was merely tossed off to fill a record.. |

Re: Bob Dylan Thread [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 12 May 2008 02:36 AM CDT Quote he's really into it, My understanding fo the events is that Bob refused to go out and perform unless his appearance was not filmed. After some pleading he partially relented allowing just 2 of the 4 songs ('Baby Let Me Follow You' down and 'Forever Young') to be filmed. So we almost did not get to see it. Levon Helm has complained (and I can understand the complaint) that Scorsese made The Band look like Robbie Robertson's sidemen. Manuel and Hudson certainly didn't get much screen time even when they were singing. And of course there is the infamous lump of white powder eventually photo-shopped off of N.Y.'s nose for the DVD. Still it was a great event and film of a great band. |

Re: Alternate Universe Beach Boys: What if David never quit? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 12 May 2008 12:23 AM CDT This is one of those giant questions that no one can answer, or no two people will answer alike. But two things I'm sure of...Brian would have been happier because he would not have had to come back to touring full-time in late '63 to late '64 ...he could have done the major gigs, TV shows...but stayed home when the band slogged through lengthy tours. Having both Al and David was a plus for the band in the studio as well. And later on when Carl became more of a vocalist...David would have given the Beach Boys a stronger guitar identity because he was intensely devoted to his instrument, especially on LP's like Wild Honey, which has a bluesy, soul vibe, but is really thin on guitar sounds. David's Moon era guitar style would have been a perfect fit for that album. |

Re: Pacific Ocean Blue - Review + more news [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 11 May 2008 10:30 PM CDT This is just incredibly exciting. Every now and then something gets done just right, and this sounds like it was done just right, in immaculate good taste, with maximum care, skill, and effort. Dennis deserves no less. By far the best Beach Boys album after Sunflower, and its day seems to have finally arrived. My thanks in advance to everyone who touched it or o.k.ed it. |
Re: Alternate Universe Beach Boys: What if David never quit? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 11 May 2008 10:21 PM CDT I really thought about this topic after hearing David's eye-opening I Think About You Often album. I think he'd have brought some harder edges to the band starting in 1966 or so, when he was finally old enough to shave, and a lot of wit and humor, maybe of the "I'd Love Just Once To See You" variety. His cocky smart-ass sensibility MIGHT have brought more of Dennis' same to the fore, and provided that neither of them did self- immolate in a flaming frenzy of drugs and women and squirt guns filled with pee, he MIGHT have greatly increased Dennis' contributions and sped his development along just by being like-minded and supportive. I think he'd have brought a stronger guitar sensibility to the band. I think he'd have emerged as a strong songwriter early and often, probably would have written a hit. Unless he could have found his way into the vocal mix, Dennis would have had to step up and sing more. I think he'd have impregnated all three Rovell sisters and Ginger, Sharon Marie, Annette (during the "Monkey's Uncle" sessions), Bob and Sheri, and so many others that between him and Mike the Sunflower cover photo would have had to be shot from the air. Or, he might have filled up a squirt gun with pee, shot Manson with it, and you can guess the rest. Or, he might have done so much coke that his face caved completely in, and been put in a home, sitting in a chair, strapped to a feeding tube, with no face, visited once by Murry in 1971 to say "Rotsa ruck!" We'll never know, and more's the pity. But he's still around, he's making great music right now, and probably peeing into a squirt gun this very moment as Carrie phones her attorney. A tip of my cap to 'em both. Only thing I feel really sure about is that if he had stayed in the band this thread would be about Al, and we'd be saying "Maybe he'd have brought more of a Dylan feel to the band, as well as better dental awareness..." |
