I knew "Holy Man" had no vocal recorded, and even then, I seriously thought it was Dennis.

yep - sat here scratching my head trying to work out what I was missing - no lyrics, song finished 30 years later - how/what the hell is Dennis singing?

sounds like a great song.

Re: 1981 Hotel Tape [Smiley Smile Message Board]

The other "hotel tape" you're thinking of, John, is a video whereas the 1981 recording is just an audio recording.  The video you reference is from Toronto and was recorded on July 2nd, 1990.  This was two days before Jeff's final gig as a backing musician with the band (July 4th, 1990 in Maine).

John Stamos is the fourth person included on that tape along with Brian, Bruce and Foskett.  I don't know of anyone that has a good, clean copy of this although I imagine one exists somewhere.  All the copies I'm aware of are several generations old and it shows!

That book was an oasis in the desert, in those pre-net days...information, photos, it was all a whole lot tougher to come by.  And if you happened to meet another hard-core fan, you'd talk for hours and each tell each other five big things the other guy didn't know...

During Country Air there is a buzzing sound that comes and goes. I was told that there was a an electrical problem of some sort, but I always thought that they had that in there to sound like bees. Still do!
And that song has the best "hum" in any rock song. Not a bad whistle either.
I've always wondered about that buzzing too.

Your point is taken into consideration. I will not, however, refrain from posting whatever I want, in whatever thread I want. Nor will I comment when others do the same. Thanks.

On the intro to "California Girls", at the 10 second mark, does Hal Blaine accidently hit his cymbal?

Yeah, that's always annoyed the merda outta me. How that slipped past Mr. Golden Ears, I dunno.

Re: Weezer - Red Album [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I always thought that Maladroit sounded like a bunch of 'snippets' of songs - small musical experiments such as ideas for riffs and hooks all flying around that were unfocused and in the end led to a messy record.

Green is an odd one.  It's very sterile and lacks emotion, as if it's a direct reaction to the criticism Rivers' met with over the raw feeling he expressed on Pinkerton.  However, those tunes are catchy as hell.  It's 'pop by numbers' but a truly excellent experiment in that direction.

Make Believe, in my opinion is near impossible to listen to.  Someone already mentioned the vile mastering job and I have to agree with them.  It seems like a venture into the emo genre they helped create a decade earlier with Pinkerton, and it's very misguided.  Funnily enough, Weezer fans seem to despise 'Beverly Hills' but I believe it's the only worthwhile track on the record.  Quirky, catchy and very funny.  If anyone can inform me as to why the song is despised so - I would be very glad.

I've heard those first 8 tunes from Red (it isn't out in the UK yet) but I've really enjoyed it.  A very tongue in cheek 'I don't care about the fans' record.  I've had Dreaming stuck in my head for weeks.  I had high hopes for 'Pig', so I'm hoping some of the criticism here doesn't ring true for myself later on.

It comes out on the same day as Pacific Ocean Blue over here...it'll be a fine day!

Luther, I can't help but notice that you bash the 1985 album or SIP every chance you get, here, and over there too. Just wondering, do you have an axe to grind on this matter or don't you realize you've made your point? And made it to the point of exhaustion already. I know you're the author of 3,000 posts here, so we've got you marked down for someone with an extreme dislike for certain BB music. There are no bonus points for repetitiveness!

I posted my song "A Matter of Fact," finished (harmonies--done live, then doubled, so this isn't a wall-o-luther--and mixed) today. It is at: myspace.com/thebeaumondes. Hope you like it.

On He's a Doll (i know i've asked this before) but what's the crunching noise? and what's the percussion instrument used on Breakaway?

Right, those two tracks. In a previous draft of my post, I said "most of BB'85". Besides the two you mentioned, and perhaps I'm So Lonely, BB'85 was very "modern".

A better word to use: Adult contemporary!
Better still: merda.

I remember reading somewhere that this "click" noise came from the activation of a switch on the mixing console. (I could be wrong though)

For me if "Bad but Catchy" was defined as: "A song you could never play for friends because its just too embarrasing to admit you like it" then my vote goes to Solar System - I can't help but love a song with a line like "If Mars had life on it I might find my wife on it"!!! JOY!!! but what a clunker of a song .........

Modern maybe, but not as rock and roll sounding or raw likely due to  the 80s production. However I should have made it more clear I guess I was thinking primarily in terms of live act/image not so much studio albums.
