There's nothing really Earth-shatteringly vital in the piece, other than David's summary of how he got to meet Dennis and sing on "He's a Bum" with a bunch of other journalists.

Am I allowed to post it here?

PACIFIC OCEAN BLUES
by David Leaf
It doesn't seem possible that it's been thirty years since Dennis Wilson became the first of the Beach Boys to release a solo album…

I have a Captain Sensible Christmas record which came with a fluffy white beard and Santa hat so maybe that would suffice. Great record too!

Anyone looked at the David Leaf pdf file on POB yet?

Now if only that Looking Back With Love legacy edition would come with a cap and fake beard: all would be well in the world.

but before the 'Looking Back With Love' Legacy Edition, can we please have a 2 CD Set with all the Honeys/Spring material? From "Pray For Surf" to "Tonight You Belong To Me", the Spring album, "Shyin' Away" to "It's Like Heaven" etc. with unreleased bonus cuts like "Shortenin' Bread" for AGD and "Silly Walls"...

now if only the 2 carl wilsons solo albums will get the same treatment with some bonus tracks any word on that?

Bonus tracks ? Jeez, the ones they released were bad enough...

Please, if anyone at BRI is considering re-issuing Carl Wilson's album's and monitoring this board to gauge levels of enthusiasm, don't take Andrew's comment as being representative of everyone here.

Myself, Emdeeh, and I'm sure many many others, would personally love to have these albums given the POB treatment.

Carl Wilson's albums might not have attained the same cult status as POB but it's a great shame that a body of work built around Carl Wilson's voice isn't currently available.

Andrew, once we've got Carl's albums given the Legacy treatment, then we can start pleading for Looking Back With Love, the Celebration album and others to be re-issued too!   Evil

I've always been a huge fan of his fifties stuff and some after that.  I love In A Silent Way and will be picking up that box some time this summer.  The Gil Evans box is fantastic, needless to say. I've also got the Bitches Brew set, and was cheesed off at the total misrepresentation of what it is, but still love the content, regardless.

Got to see him live twice...

The Kinks Katalog...2008 And Still NO RESPECT. [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 17 Jun 2008 01:45 AM CDT

WHY has there never been a moment in my whole life where the Kinks Katalog was in decent shape?

It's 2008, we've got a doohickey on Mars, I think, and STILL...no box set.  No Great Lost Kinks Album EVER. No decent version EVER of Kinks-Size or Kinkdom in anything like original form. Their great albums are treated like army brats, moving from one half-assed reissue label to another with no real deluxe treatment like Bowie's great albums, Elton John's great albums, Clapton's great albums, the Who's great albums, or any of what Dusty Springfield or the Zombies or Marvin Gaye get. Village Green has had a few fly-by-night stabs, but that's really it.

Whose krank did these guys step on, for all of time?

Suggestion- spring for the Zombies' box set and get the whole enchilada on four discs.  Zero risk factor, I assure you. Their whole career is sprinkled with gems that you shouldn't live without. You can thank me in your memoirs.

Needless to add, (I hope), if we're talking about more suggestions, and the Left Banke is a very good one, make sure you have The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, which is usually listed alongside Pet Sounds and O & O.

The Who Sell Out is a must. A good collection of the Turtles is a must. The Bacharach box is a must.

And a great semi-hidden gem is the Guess Who's Canned Wheat.  Nothing but great gems on that album (and one long drum solo).  I wish I could post a few samples. Joe Bob sez check it out.

Here's all I could find on YouTube- the incredibly great original version of "No Time"- well worth the price of the album (eight bucks or so):

LOVE Randy Bachman's sound...

...and a nice (anti-war) album cut called "Minstrel Boy", with shaky audio here, but you can get the idea:

Re: The Who [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Where ya been, man?  I  had Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy when I was eight years old and have loved these guys for about as long as I can remember.  When I was in high school- the Kenny Jones era- I was totally obsessed. My three big groups from childhood onward have been the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Who. The Kinks, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Sinatra, and many others got on board as I went along...

Now you need to own everything- everything Moon played on.  I'm tempted to suggest the box set, but maybe go for the deluxe Live At Leeds and Tommy, if you haven't already.  Then Odds and Sods to add a little spice to the mix, and then hold your breath and dive into Quadrophenia. Their BBC set is great.  The Kids Are Alright soundtrack is a must.  It's all a must.

It's tragic anytime anyone waits later than high school to discover Quadrophenia- I'm not sure it can have its full impact on you when your older.

I have to disagree with you: all of his falsettos from 15BO-era onward sound to me very different than his earlier voice.
I don't disagree with that, I also hear a marked difference on his post-1973 falsettos. But what I was saying was he evidently had the ability to switch to a gruffer-manly tone during the 15 Big Ones, Love You era, while he still possessed a small portion of his sweeter voice. I mean, listening to the "Clouds in the sky" part of "Airplane" and then the "down down, on the ground" part, it's two different "characters" for lack of a better word.

So I put my money on Brian for "it rained on the mountain..."
You've Lost That Loving Feeling has him doing the two voices too, but yes I can't compare anything from the era to his pre 1975 vocals.

It's fake the picture of Brian is in the John Milward book in the front collage. Also seen the Paul picture I think in Beatles Book Monthly.

Bobby Lloyd Hicks wrote an account of the taping for ESQ when the album came out.  Bruce was at both shows, IIRC.
Does anyone have this, or can anyone quote the more interesting parts from it?

Using official material, not that close.  Summer Days is closer,

"Do You Wanna Dance?" and "Good to My Baby" are is stereo track only,

"When I Grow Up","Dance, Dance, Dance","Please Let Me Wonder","Kiss Me, Baby","She Knows Me Too Well" have the full remix treatment, leaving "Don't Hurt My Little Sister", "Help Me, Ronda", "I'm So Young", "In the Back of My Mind", and, uh, Bull Session.

i always felt that applause was forced or it was added in the audio, i don't really see too many people clapping. They make it seem like it's a burt bacharach song.

So with new stereo remixes of When I Grow Up and She Knows Me To Well, how close are we to a Stereo "Today"?

POB / Bambu on Amazon Best Sellers List [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 16 Jun 2008 09:45 PM CDT

Right now it's 16 in Music, 6 in Adult Alternative, and 10 in Rock.
And 3 in Country...which is gratifying to know that as well as Country sells these days,
even though Dennis isn't country, he's able to outsell all but 2 other artists for the moment.

Question(s) about the Imagination promo concert? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 16 Jun 2008 09:32 PM CDT

This concert footage always fascinates me, from what I hear Brian could barely sing throughout the concert and the close-ups were done later. I'd like a little more info, was anyone actually there that can talk about it?

This must've been awfully awkward for people in the crowd, go to see your hero and he's so nervous can barely sing; as well as the musicians. During the taped portion with an audience, was there a guide vocal Brian was singing along to?

And one more, Bruce was at this concert, which was taped on May 9th 1998. Also on that day, Alan played his last concert with the BB, which he was contracted to. Does this mean that Bruce wasn't at that BB concert and thus not contracted to play at it? I love that Bruce played with Brian, without the other Boys, and sang his praises. Shame he's not that way today...

(Also, the crowd gives "She Says That She Needs" me a rapturous reception at the beginning and end, so he must've done a decent performance on that...)

Any help is appreciated.

Does anyone know when it will be released in Japan? I was in HMV in Tokyo yesterday but no sign of it. I was thinking of making the trek to Tower today but am still pondering that. I did see it on Amazon Japan for 3148 yen  ($30 US dollars). Does anyone in the know, know if that would be the price I'd find it for in a store here?

Re: Vocals on \ [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Back in 2003, I co-produced the Carl Wilson Cancer Foundation's documentary about Carl's life with Alan Boyd. One day, a batch of rough mixes came to Alan's while we were working on the film. He played them... it sounded great... and that was that. I don't know if the demo was ever bootlegged or not. I know Alan didn't want to give it out, and that's his perrogative.

Cool story.

I'm now also insanely jealous  Cheesy
