I didn't want to piss on his Picasso...Taylor Hawkins [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 22 Jun 2008 12:00 AM CDT http://www.gigwise.com/article?id=44006&image=2#gallery Foo Fighters Drummer Talks About 'Beach Boys' Collaboration by James Dannatt 20 June 2008 Photo by: Carsten Windhorst Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has revealed his affiliation with Beach Boy Dennis Wilson after he collaborated on the reworking of Wilson's 'Holy Man' taken from the reissue of the classic Pacific Ocean Blue. Hawkins sings lead vocals to new lyrics written by Wilson's songwriter partner Gregg Jakobson on the song that had previously been left as an instrumental. A huge fan of the Beach Boys star, Hawkins revealed to The Sun that he shares a special bond with Wilson. "He's a drummer. He grew up on the beach and Gregg always said that we had somewhat similar voices, kinda rough, not exactly Pavarotti, a bit scratchy," he said. Hawkins also admitted he had initial doubts over the recording. "I was a little nervous. I was like 'Who the foda am I to do it?' This stuff is pretty sacred. I didn't want to piss on his Picasso." Wilson, a drummer like Hawkins, died in 1983 of an alcoholic drowning incident and has been regarded as an under appreciated member of the influential band. Hawkins expressed his thoughts on the life of Wilson: "I think he was terribly insecure 'cos he had these two brothers. One of 'em, Carl, had the voice of an angel and the other, Brian, is a mad genius. But Dennis was the only one who surfed - he was the real Beach Boy." The Foo Fighters drummer's bandmate Dave Grohl has given Hawkins his seal of approval on the track. Hawkins explained: "He loved it, thought it was totally beautiful, but I don't think he's ever heard Pacific Ocean Blue. It's hard to sit him down to actually listen to something. "He's as busy as foda, always got something going on with his family and all that stuff." Foo Fighters are currently on a world tour and you can see pictures of their historic Wembley Stadium headline performance with Led Zeppelin see below... |

Re: Dennis Wilson podcast - Episode One [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 21 Jun 2008 07:03 PM CDT Has the 3rd part of this podcast been posted? I don't think so, but I could be wrong. If not, it seems that there has been a long delay since the 2nd segment (May 30th). Now that the album is out it would be perfect timing for them to release the 3rd and final segment. Yes, it has been posted:http://blogs.legacyrecordings.com/podcast/dennis-wilson-3/ |

Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 21 Jun 2008 06:11 PM CDT Odd joke...since Capitol has ZERO to do with the POB/Bambu release it is a stretch. But anyway...I did get to hold in my hands an advance copy of the Sundazed three LP Blue vinyl POB/Bambu set and it is absolutely SPECTACULAR!!! Truly beautiful...and heavy. I suggest everyone order one, find one, get one...they are so damn cool. |

POB - Radio Spotting [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 21 Jun 2008 03:24 PM CDT Jumped into the car to go out last night, turned on the ignition and a very familiar sound met my ears - "but I don't have that on CD yet" was my reaction, "it's the radio stupid" - "hell, it's Dennis!". So I reckon we need a thread where we list when we hear DW POB/BAMBU tracks on the radio as its a good indication of commercial acceptance - just isolated tracks, not specials featuring the album, just tracks. I'll kick it off: TRACK: Holy Man (instrumental) STATION: FBI 94.5 (Sydney, Australia) - Indenpendent community station with youth demographics. DATE: Sat 21st June |
Re: 30 Years Ago Tonight [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 21 Jun 2008 02:53 PM CDT This may be a hard question because I think Brian took up the bass for two years on stage (76-78) and things change, but.... When he was playing it, was there a backup musician playing behind him, just in case he lost interest in the middle of a song? Judging from photos & videos I've seen, Brian initially played piano only when returning to the stage in '76, but by the end of that year he was playing bass on two songs. Late in '77, he switched mostly to bass and stayed that way throughout '78. Eddie Carter was there, but playing guitar while Brian played bass. Eddie took over on bass for a couple of songs mid-set, while Brian disappeared with Dennis, or played keyboard, depending on the song and the night. Brian was in the hospital for most of August '78, so Ed played bass for the whole set then. And also, was Brian in decent voice (especially falsetto) when either of you saw him? |
Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 21 Jun 2008 02:36 PM CDT Wait, I still don't get it... I know it's coming out on vinyl, but that's just a joke, right? The vinyl won't be out on Capitol but on Sundazed and it will be 3 instead of 2 LP's, so of course it's a joke. |

Re: Bubble Boy [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 21 Jun 2008 12:41 PM CDT Aegir, that is the perfect review of an Adam Sandler movie. Sounds like a review of Zohan. Pretty much every Sandler movie except Punch Drunk Love, Spanglish, and Reign Over Me follow the exact same funny-but-really-dumb-and-cheesy formula. |
