The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 14 Jun 2008 10:48 PM CDT So am i really thinking about buying this album soon. I've heard so much praise for it that i couldn't help but listen to some tunes on youtube. I was pretty blown away. Really beautiful melodies. I had such a reaction to the music that i would almost compare it to the first time i heard Pet Sounds. (almost). How is this album not as well known as Sgt Pepper and Pet Sounds? Any fans of this masterpiece out there?
Posted: 14 Jun 2008 10:28 PM CDT So tonight I saw the "Legends of Surf Music featuring Al Jardine and the Surf City All-Stars" (what a mouthful), which in this incarnation was Al Jardine, Matt Jardine, Don Raymond, David Logeman, Gary Griffin, and oddly enough Chris Farmer. They played the usual "hits", nothing special to note there. There was a lot of audience participation activities, though. One of them was that David Logeman the drummer calling four people from the audience (including myself) to play the drum solo from Wipeout. Al played keyboard on this song. The audience had to choose which person played the drum solo the best, and I didn't win but the woman who did won a copy of "When We Get to Surf City" by Bob Greene. I don't know what happened towards the end but they ended up taking too long and didn't finish their whole set. In the middle of Surfin' USA, someone turned all their microphones off! Geeze. Everyone pretty much ran off the stage after that but I managed to shake Al's hand and say, "Al! I love you, man!" before he left.

Re: HMV - POB is on it's way!? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 14 Jun 2008 05:59 PM CDT Nah, I'm only kidding. With everyone posting that they already had the discs, I thought a little gallows humour was in order for us mortals who have to wait until the official release date. Damn, I can't believe I fell for that. Still, at least my copy has the Dennis version of 'Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again' intact as a hidden song on disc 1. Took some finding, I can tell you. Good luck guys!
Re: Sunflower [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 14 Jun 2008 05:18 PM CDT I can´t say enough good things about this album! I love the production, singing, songwriting.. The only tracks I would change is "At my window" and "All I wanna do" which I´ve always thought should have been replaced with "San Miquel", "Susie Cincinatti", Good times or "Games too can play". First I was kinda bugged that Brian didn´t sing more lead vocals on the album, but you can clearly hear him singing harmony in almost every song. For me this is right up there with Pet Sounds, Today and Summer Days

Re: Energy [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 14 Jun 2008 02:50 PM CDT You guys are having a great discussion here. It's good to see it--no name-calling! I tend to lean left politically but also do believe that without continuing to (as sensibly as possible) use our own (U.S., that is) oil supplies, we're digging ourselves a deeper hole in terms of reliance on unstable and unfriendly nations. One small glimmer of hope I have is from some stories I've read this week that the oil supplies beneath North Dakota are increasingly being retrieved and with technological advances may bring more still. I don't think we can rest easy knowing there is more domestic oil to use/waste, but hopefully we can continue to reduce dependence on the Irans and Saudi Arabias of the world while we find another source of power. Re: AL JARDINE ON HEROES [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 14 Jun 2008 02:37 PM CDT Didn't want to start a new thread about it--Al Jardine will not be on today's show--but just a reminder for anyone interested that the Heroes & Villains internet radio show is on luxuriamusic.com in 25 minutes (3 pm Central time, 1 pm Pacific, 4 pm Eastern, figure out the others from those!). There is a chat room there that can be a good time. Listen in and chat along. (It's free.)
Posted: 14 Jun 2008 02:31 PM CDT I agree that most of these are the typical reference-drop bands. Nothing wrong with them--I'm always glad to see bands working whether I like them or not (The world doesn't need more accountants, lawyers or customer service representatives--it needs more working artists!)--but if you're looking for something anywhere near the quality of the late 60s Beach Boys, these aren't the bands. They're just bands that like that period of music, and in whom you can hear the influence. Personally, I think looking for "today's [old band]" is always a mistake, because you're inherently going backward. I believe in continuing to enjoy what has come before and listening to what comes now for what it is, and letting it become what it becomes as time passes. Maybe they're passing fads, maybe they grow in stature with age, whatever. It's music: enjoy what you enjoy, don't listen to what you don't enjoy.
Re: Carl's vocal on AJ track [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 14 Jun 2008 02:27 PM CDT Help me rhonda sucks. Sounds just like they did it in the early seventies to me. During Chuck Kelley's interview with Al, that is what Al said he was doing. So it's not a coincidence or anything, he just wanted to do it that way. I wasn't thrilled with it, but I thought it was fine. Frankly, I liked it more than several of the other tunes I've heard samples from, including "Don't Go Near the Sea," which I am about to listen to (the sample of) again, but when Chuck played it, I thought it sounded pretty annoying/cheesy. Maybe it will grow on me. I definitely don't think it sounds anything like a hit--at least not in today's world.

Re: Little Deuce Coupe [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 14 Jun 2008 01:19 PM CDT Songs like Ballad of Ole Betsy, Spirit of America, Young Man is Gone, et cetera are car songs in name only. Great point. They are nearly ALL just "car songs" in name only. They are love songs to things, hymns to a materialist God, patriotic anthems to objects and absurdities. Cherry Cherry Coupe immortalizes the car more than Help Me Rhonda immortalizes Rhonda. Listening to the album is like looking at Michelangelo drawings of of corvettes and Model T's..
