Happy birthday Brian!!

Just realized, Brian's birthday - same day as Summer Solstice.

Co-incidence? I think not....the man who brought so much joy to so many summers couldn't have been born on any other day really.  Grin Things like that just seem to make sense with Mr. BW

Wow.  Strange I've never heard that as part of the 'legend'.  That alone probably would have increased ticket sales, lol.  Something like

"This man was born to bring you summer"

Save your money and buy his Columbia album with THE GREAT GABOR SZABO on guitar.

I just got it yesterday! Great minds think alike, don't they?  Wink

I take it you're not impressed with the vinyl re-release?

My Diane is very good.
She's Got Rhythm, Woncha Come Out Tonight and Winds Of Change (purely for the end, which I like) are good.
Peggy Sue, Kona Coast, Come Go With Me and Pitter Patter are tolerable to okay.
Everything else is awful. Worst song of the album? Split between Belles and Sweet Sunday.

Nice!  Thanks for posting.  Boy, did that guy do a beautiful job channeling Dennis' voice.

Great stuff, Sheriff- thanks for sharing.  Thirty years, huh?  Hard to believe.  I was still an aspiring juvenile delinquent, probably throwing rocks at cars or peeing off an overpass on that warm Summer evening in 1978. If you had given birth to a son that night, he'd be older now than David Marks was in...wait a minute...that can't be right...put it this way: since then, Mike and Bruce have performed "California Girls" and the hot rod medley 10,930 times each (once a day and twice every July 4th), with Mike also racking up approximately 44,200 chicken dances (about four per show, minus performances in Utah, where it is illegal).

Your description of the show that night triggers a lame question I've always meant to ask: is the symphonic version of "God Only Knows" that they used to play after shows available anywhere?

Terry Jacks also wrote an unreleased song with Al. It says something about it somewhere on AGD's site.

The liner notes say that "Tug Of Love" was pulled when "End Of The Show" was added. Damn. Why couldn't they have just added it. And "Only With You".

There were 12 songs on POB; what's wrong (no pun intended) with 14? Well, I'm taking the liberty to put "Tug Of Love" right after "River Song" and "Only With You" right after "Time" - on my personal POB. I'm also using "Piano Variations On Thoughts Of You" as a hidden track after "End Of The Show".

I don't see "Are You Real" on the "dreamer" web site either... is that  a previously unknown entry?

His sound was too concise for jamming. The spaciness was experimentation within the style he helped invent, master and which he felt most comfortable producing.

With this in mind, I would compare SMiLE-era Brian with Moody Blues rather than Pink Floyd.

POB Bambu on Vinyl! [Smiley Smile Message Board]

AP (Los Angeles): As an homage to Beach Boys "twofer" reissues from the 1970s, Capitol records will issue a limited edition, 2 LP vinyl version of Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" and "Bambu," featuring 70s cover graphics, poor vinyl pressings, and two songs deleted from each LP.

"We felt that Dennis, as a singer/songwriter of the highest artistic calibre, was fully deserving of the same shoddy treatment that the Beach Boys received in the 70s," said Capitol Vice President Creed Vander Mark.  "Therefore, we have pressed these LPs on substandard vinyl and hacked two songs off of each album."

Vander Mark is particularly proud of the graphics.  "The double album cover features a purple border, 70s Euro-style graphics, and random, inappropriate photos of Dennis - many of which depict him from a completely different era."

"We are really excited about the vinyl we used," he continued.  "We had to break into a locked file cabinet to find the exact formula that was used for LPs during the energy crisis of the 70s.  We even made sure to melt down defective LPs that had been shipped back and added them to the new vinyl compound, with chunks of the labels ground up along with the melted vinyl."

Capitol executives had a difficult time reaching consensus on a record label design, however.  "One contingent was really gung-ho for the yellow label with "Capitol" in orange typeface.  Eventually, we went with the red/orange label, with olive typeface, the same one used on 'Endless Summer.'"

As an incentive for vinyl buyers, the double album will be priced at only $9.99.  "Two for the price of one.  That was the only way we could unload this ancient crap during the 70s," Vander Mark said.

Plans are underway to issue the abridged version of "Pacific Ocean Blue" and "Bambu" on 8-track, according to an internal Capitol memo.

1) Is there a song on the above web site that corresponds with "Love Remembers Me," or is it a previously unknown DW song?

Love Remember Me is a composite of two songs - I Don't Know and My Love's Comin' Down.

2) I know why "Baby Blue Eyes" wasn't included, but why wasn't "10,000 Years" and "New Orleans" included?

10,000 Years was most likely not included because it might not have been found......New Orleans is the backing track for Time For Bed.

I assume "not found" means, since it's unofficially available, a copy that could be cleaned up could not be found.

Thank you for the info!
