Re: Brian And Solo's In Songs [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 10 Oct 2008 04:20 AM CDT Whats interesting is rarely does a BW song have a solo at all...Certainly makes him unique.. Great call! This was initially exactly my starting point, only: I didn't have the time to browse the catalogue to see if I'd missed anything. One of his other hallmarks is the brilliant 'outro', where you get hooked and wish it would go on forever... 'Meant For You' is one of the less famous but just as wonderful examples. Heh: best outro's ever: Surf's Up, California Girls, 'Til I Die, God Only Knows, and, oh, a hundred others. Worst outro ever: Hey Jude. I have spoken.

Re: Be My Baby [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 10 Oct 2008 03:03 AM CDT Quote 'The Ronette's Greatest Hits' appeared in true stereo on the Phil Spector International label in 1976 or thereabouts. I think it was a Polydor license deal for only a couple of years. I would like to hear that. How is the mix and is the sound superior to the disappointing sound on the "Back To Mono" box set.

Re: We Three Kings [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 09 Oct 2008 10:21 PM CDT Back to "We Three Kings"....That is a song, like a few other BW/BB classics like "In My Room", "God Only Knows", "Sloop John B", "This Whole World" - THAT I NEVER GET TIRED OF HEARING! I totally agree Sheriff, We Three Kings is beautiful... I have always longed for a release of the backing track and an a cappella version... without doubt my favourite song on the Christmas Album.
Re: Late 60's/Early 70's Rarities? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 09 Oct 2008 10:06 PM CDT I was wondering where I could find downloads to rarities including Beatrice From Baltimore, Sail On Sailor (demo), Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again, Til I Die (demo), Caribou Sessions, and other rare songs from the late 60's and early 70's? Thanks! As far as I know, Beatrice from Baltimore, the demo of Sail On Sailor, and WIBNTLA still haven't been "leaked"...PM me if you want to know where to find some rare stuff, don't ask on the public board...

Re: We Three Kings [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 09 Oct 2008 09:48 PM CDT Back to "We Three Kings"....That is a song, like a few other BW/BB classics like "In My Room", "God Only Knows", "Sloop John B", "This Whole World" - THAT I NEVER GET TIRED OF HEARING! The Beach Boys' Christmas Album could've been even better with just a couple more FAST Christmas songs (on Side 2) with the sleigbells, saxophones, and the rest of The Wrecking Crew doing their thing. But....I still find the album underrated in some ways because it contains some of the very best Brian Wilson lead vocals ever. His voice might've been at its clearest and purist; vocals don't get much better than BW's leads on "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", and his high falsetto on the fast stuff. I completely agree Sheriff, I love the Christmas Album. The second side is a bid dreary, but there are plently of beautiful moments. For my money, "Blue Christmas" is one of Brian's best non-falsetto vocals. Like you said, clear and pure, just amazing. The harmonies on "I'll Be Home For Christmas" give me chills. Same with "We Three Kings". A few faster songs would have been nice, but the first side was pretty upbeat, so I suppose it balances out.

Re: We Three Kings [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 09 Oct 2008 06:46 PM CDT I didn't think the Good Vibrations performance was THAT bad, all things considered. That song isn't meant to be played solo with just a piano. What he was playing was indeed simple, but he was just basically doing what the organ was doing on the recording. I'm sure his nerves didn't help much either. I agree. Saw the performance the night it was broadcast, and, despite the wince factor, there was/is something eerily fascinating about this. Whenever I watch the clip, I can't help but wonder what was going through Brian's mind. Is that the most bizarre trio of songs performed in front of a hip audience on national TV? "Back Home", "Love Is A Woman", and "Good Vibrations" with only a piano? Those were the daze... Back to "We Three Kings"....That is a song, like a few other BW/BB classics like "In My Room", "God Only Knows", "Sloop John B", "This Whole World" - THAT I NEVER GET TIRED OF HEARING! Re: We Three Kings [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 09 Oct 2008 06:42 PM CDT I've always loved Three Kings, it's easily my favorite tune on the Christmas album ... How's this for useless trivia? "We Three Kings" was written in Williamsport, PA, the same location of a university called Lycoming College where Bob Moog received a doctorate degree -- & I think Mr. Moog was somehow involved with building the fake Theremin used on "Good Vibrations"! See, it's all connected! I go to Mansfield U. and that is only an hour and a half away!! That is really weird!!
Re: Postcard From California [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 09 Oct 2008 06:22 PM CDT I have told Trish that Al's voice and spirit have not changed since the 60's. An honest observation. Heck, if you listen to him over the years, he really never did sound different. He obviously takes good care of his voice. As for the album, I have already reserved both dollars and a space in my collection for it. Whenever the "powers that be" make it available, I will gladly buy it. There is a lot of things that an artist needs to get done to get their album released. Especially when they are not already on a label.

Brian And Solo's In Songs [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 09 Oct 2008 01:34 PM CDT ...this has been a minor, albeit persistent riddle in my mind for a long time. What was and is Brian's attitude towards solo's? I think it's safe to say he isn't exactly keen on 'improvisational' solo's that go on endlessly without going anywhere. At first, a long time ago, I had to get used a bit to his tactic of 'building in a quiet couple of bars' into a song (think: Don't Worry Baby, where only three staccato notes (guitar? manually hammered other string?) fill the bridge. Same with Please Let Me Wonder, organ, tambourine, and again that hammering effect. No showing off at all. I love it and think it's rather special in all its humility. Less is more. And I don't particularly like the 'rocky' soloing in 'It's About Time', or 'All I Want To Do'. Other bands can do that too. That said, Bri was actually fantastic at the 'tiny, hi-energy' solos, as in 'Help Me Rhonda', and 'Do You Wanna Dance'. Sort of mini-Ventures, or Shadows, or Dick Dale. Short and sweet. Did he ever comment on the nature of a solo? And say whether he liked them, if at all?
