Re: Going to see Brian (For the first time!) [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 18 Oct 2008 06:34 AM CDT

Am i dreaming? I just found out on Brian's official site that he will be doing an autograph session the day of the concert. (My FIRST Brian concert!). This is amazing. I'm definately going to wake up early that morning. Actually, i probably won't be able to sleep the night before.

Has anyone been to a Brian autograph session before? If so, how does the whole thing work? (Yeah, i've never done it before.)

I have. It depends on his mood of the day. Bear in mind: if he comes across as a bit wary, reluctant, that's just his then state of mind, never something personal towards others. In my situation he limited it to just one autograph (on my SMiLE programme), and did not really want a chat. But on another occasion, a Dutch fan approached him when he left the tour bus, and got several photos taken. Brian then signed multiple times, even the guy's Fender Stratocaster, with a real complete autograph (lovely!). On other days he just does his initials, not too legible.
Perhaps if one catches him by surprise, he's much more spontaneous and communicative then on occasions where he knows in advance that he'll have to sit for half an hour; and maybe gets worked up over it beforehand.
So:
1. Watch carefully for when he visits the toilet.
2. Wait outside.
3. When he opens the door, pretend to be just wanting to take a leak.
4. Then, look up, and exclamate: 'Why, it's Brian! Brian Wilson himself! How you doing? Want to join me for a hamburger?
5. Success guaranteed. Mission accomplished.

A SMiLE sign. Only one SMiLE song... well, um, Good Vibrations (a minor non-hit, added as an afterthought).

This is called discrepancy.

Just kidding. But being used to sold-out premières at the London RFH, your report really offers another insight to me.

For me it's revelatory. Never heard it that way. Now I hate the track.

Van Morrison, and Brian Wilson.

I was thinking of an up-side-down colander....

The phrase "chrome dome" springs to mind.

Recorded during the CATP sessions.

For me it's The Who (the original lineup of course).

AGD's awesome site says it was penned by ( Alan Jardine?--obviously he isn't sure himself) and says the lead vocal is Alan.

Scott - I'm really enjoying your posts.  I generally see you guys at least once a year, most often at Humphrey's in San Diego.  Having heard lots of same songs year after year, I appreciate a fresh setlist that includes as many "rarities" as possible.

Here are a few questions I have:

(1)  What is it that makes a casino show less ideal for rarities?  Am I correct in assuming it may be the overall clientele?  But, having seen Brian Wilson at a casino concert, I can attest to the fact that there were many hardcore fans in attendance there.  What types of venues are more conducive to rarities, and which are less so?  How does Humphrey's in San Diego compare in this regard?

(2)  I have noticed a huge difference in concert length depending on the venue.  What factors account for this difference?

(3)  The BB's setlist has definitely improved with the addition of lesser known songs. Are you the main person responsible for the overall setlist and the addition of "rarities"?

Does anybody have any information on this song? It sounds like it's sung by Al and Bruce. The only instrument being played is a keyboard. The thing that interested me in it is that there is a short section that has the exact same chord change found in the song Oh Lord from the Cocaine Sessions.

I've always assumed it was "ah-oom dirty water."

Revelation re: Don't Go Near the Water [Smiley Smile Message Board]

During the bridge, I always thought they were singing "aum diddy wadda", which is a common doo-wop nonsense phrase. However, it just hit me that maybe they're actually saying "aum dirty water", which, if so, is incredibly clever.

Does anyone else hear it?

From mid-1967 to mid-1968 anyway, ladies and gentlemen, The Doors!

Ah there it is!  Thank you.  I think I might have set a record here for how many times I can embarrass myself in one thread.

So let's clear things up!   As I understand "In My Room" (German version) was on Rarities, it also appears on the Surfer Girl/Shut Down twofer.  What album has just the "Ganz allein" excerpt on it?

The same.  Just let the SG/SD CD run out after "I do."

I didn't (and don't) intend for this thread to be "spurious" - I had remembered the "Ganz allein" excerpt being on "Hawthorne" - I guess I was mistaken.  Was it on the Endless Harmony soundtrack?  I'm always confusing those two releases.

And from the link posted above, here's the English translation:

"It gives a place goes there I Flust´re Freud and suffering All alone, all alone Lock and bolts exclude Fear and concerns here All alone, all alone Dreams here, schmiede of plans Without sleep too fleh´n By my crying and my sighing Laughing look back Darkly ist´s, I am alone but I am not afraid All alone, all alone, all alone…. "

I LOOOOOOOOOVE babelfish. Smiley

Cool, Steve! We should all have a Smiley Board meet-up before the show.

I've seen the Beach Boys band in 1999 - 2005 - 2007 (Brian in 2006 and now next month 2008) and they've all been fun, and very good shows. My favorite had to be last year's because the energy was great from the band & the audience. I'm stoked for next weekend (especially with some potential rarities Smiley)!

Eric has the current line-up correct.  Randell is the main falsettist, although I do some of it and Bruce and I cover all the extremely high parts.  Tim sings on Getcha Back and he actually knows almost all the parts so he's our utility guy in case someone is sick.

So a typical vocal stack for us is
Randell - False
Scott - Hi Tenor
Bruce - mid tenor
Christian - lower tenor/Baritone
Mike - Bass

Donald, which show are you coming to?  If it's in Dec, I am just now working out the Christmas songs.  If it's next week, I may be able to get a few rarities in there since we are doing some performing arts centers.
Anyway, I am sure you will have a great time.

Scott

Thanks Scott!   I'll be at the Paramount Performing Arts Center 10-25, Sturday evening.  Although I've been to a couple of Brian's shows,   I haven't seen the BeachBoys since Carl died.  I'm actually quite excited to see Mike, Bruce, and company again.

i should be there also. i grew up in ashland, dad still lives there. i live just across the ohio river in ironton, oh now. last time i saw them was when they played summer motion in ashland back in 2003 or so.

Scott, my wife and I are going to your concert this Sunday here in KC. PLEASE surprise the hell out of me and do some rarities. I am a long time fan with an inordinate number of shows under my belt. Maybe Bruce could do Disney Girls? Anyway, have a safe trip to the Heartland! Until Sunday evening then.......

I received the CD this week and have listened to it once. But I think I will listen to it a couple of times more to get it all. I like the package a lot, it has a lot of information, it shows the words and above all....I think it's a vital part of The Beach Boys' history. You can listen to the whole of Be Still for the first time. Not earth shaking.
