Ahhhhhhhh, Brian. What an embarrassing photo.

If you say this one more time I'll release that Polaroid of you sitting on the loo and having a big stinking brown mountain just beneath you.

Randell Kirsch does most of them.

Who's doing the falsetto parts?

The Girl is Mine is the song that made me realize that not everything released by the Beatles is infallibly amazing.

Current lineup:
Mike Love
Bruce Johnston - keyboard
Scott Totten - guitar
Christian Love - guitar
Tim Bonhomme - keyboard
Randell Kirsch - bass
John Cowsill - drums

They all sing except maybe Tim Bonhomme. Tim usually has a microphone set up in front of him but I've never seen him use it.

One of the new songs by Brian Wilson was 'Transcendental Meditation."  Aug 5 1968 review of the Montreal show states that 'When a Man Needs A Woman' was played.  Aug 19 1968 review of the Madison show states that 'Friends' and "Wake the World' were played.

dear god, do any bootlegs exist?
was Brian on any of these shows?
i would kill to hear "When a Man Needs a Woman"

Yea no takers on hand shakes..Interesting..I have a concert video from 70"s..Good show + Dennis is buzzed but not out of hand..They are singing a slow song Or Dennis is talkin to audience..I forget..And DW leans up against electric piano behind him...Well it wont support his weight + starts to move + DW starts to fall .. You clearly see Mike movin the other way.. To let him  fall.. Whats sad is.. Every video i have clearly shows DW affection for ML..When singing slow songs allways tryin to make eye contact with Mike..

I was at the Memphis show in 1968 and can confirm that they did perform the song "Friends."

I say he's ready for the beard again.  It appears that's all he's missing, aside from singing with the surviving Beach Boys anyway....

God bless B'Dub!!!

I'm reminded of the scene in the movie 'The Big Chill'

Something like 'I work for a magazine where no story should take longer to read than the average cr@p!'

Yeah, actually, he just looks like a nice old man.

I like the first comment on the story. Swiftly putting TMZ in their place.

Copied and pasted here:

"1. TMZ, I think you mean "wandered" the parking lot. Trying to save some dough in these tough times by skimping on editors, eh. Ah, all the news that is fit to misprint. The guy's had issues, but has still contributed more to the world than anyone at TMZ can ever dream to.

 Kool-Aid Man Kool-Aid Man Kool-Aid Man Kool-Aid Man

That's awesome. I hate TMZ.

I don't think Brian looks too much different there then in any other recent photo. Also, let the man do his normal duties.

God, I hate the paparazzi.

Re: The Stephen Desper Thread [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Hi Folks, and Mr. Desper  if you're out there. I'm new to the world of message boards, so sorry if i don't follow the right protocals. Just discovered the existence of Stephen's book, (thats how i ended up here) and as a huge, huge fan of all things BB's particularly 67 through 77, am dying to read it. I am also a musician singer, with decades of home recording experience, so i am doubly interested in Stephens techniques. If i could learn ONE thing about how they recorded the vocals on Sunflower, it would be worth the price of the book.

So my question is, can someone point me to a link to purchase the book? I found and followed a few posted here, but they seem to be dead.

FWIW, my proudest home recording accomplishment is my take on Wind Chimes....Yes, I am a hardcore fan.

Thank you in advance, I look forward to sharing thoughts with all you fellow beautiful music lovers.

Hi there jh055, welcome to the board Smiley

The first edition of Stephen's book is currently out of print. He's working on a new edition but as you may appreciate it takes a lot of time as he's doing it himself... but he said he's going to let us know when it becomes available.

Would love to hear your version of Wind Chimes some time as I just love that song!! Maybe you could share it in the "Smiley Smilers Who Make Music" section of the board?

Beach boys 1988 [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 08:08 PM CDT

Stumbled on this and was wondering if anyone remembers the complete presentation. This clip is incomplete.

About 1 minute in the band comes onstage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zaxvk0gjGXQ

Brians enters from other side.
Brian holds out to shake hands with his band mates...No takers!
Mike appears to guide (push) Brian from the microphone.

I guess in early 88 word was out that Brian was going to make a solo album that must have caused some resentment but just how bad were things between Brian/ Landy and the rest of the band and was it obvious during Mikes speech?

...and is that the silliest hat of Mikes career? Razz

Obviously, there's Mike and Bruce. I believe the rest of the band consists of Scott Totten, Christian Love, John Cowsill, Tim Bonhomme, Randall Kirsch, and Chris Farmer, and formerly featured David Marks, Mike Kowalski, Adrian Baker, and Mike Meros. (not to mention Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al, Blondie, Ricky, Daryl Dragon, Billy Hinsche, Ron Brown, Ed Carter, Carli Munoz, Dennis Dragon, Robert Kenyatta, Bobby Figeuroa, Ron Altbach, Richie Kannatta, Joe Chemay, Jeff Foskett, and Matt Jardine)
Chris Farmer left the band shortly after Mike Kowalski did, too.

Re: Did the band tour to support Friends? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

First off-the MLK tour wasn't canceled-they played almost every show in April 1968 and they were playing songs from Friends-including "Friends". I quote from the April 15 1968 Sarasota Journal "They held the whole audience spellbound from the first notes of 'Darlin' through older numbers such as 'California Girls and 'Rhonda' to their latest hit, 'Friends.'"  Also-mentioned in Memphis Commercial Appeal review of April 25 1968 "the west coast group played through a program of old and new favorites like 'Let's Be Friends'".  Review of the May 1968 Iona College show with Maharishi-"They also performed a few new songs from their forthcoming Friends album...One of the new songs by Brian Wilson was 'Transcendental Meditation."  Aug 5 1968 review of the Montreal show states that 'When a Man Needs A Woman' was played.  Aug 19 1968 review of the Madison show states that 'Friends' and "Wake the World' were played.  According to Keith Badman they did "Friends" on Mike Douglas and also on the Happening TV show.  They also did 'Friends' during their app on Twien in Amsterdam-when they lip-synched to many songs in their white suits (portions of the show-though not this song-are in American Band). They also apparently taped a version of 'Friends" for Top of the Pops-that was not aired-in Dec 1968

Does anyone know if they performed the title track to the album?

They did it at least once on TV, a capella and probably not the whole song.

I really don't know, you'd probably have to check on Eric's setlist site. I think Brian's done it as a medley with "Meant for You".
