Re: Hawthorne CA - A Musical Legacy question [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 16 Oct 2008 05:35 AM CDT Since the Beatles had a hit with their German language version of "I want to hold your hand" (="Komm gib mir deine Hand") and many other UK group cut versions in German as well, Capitol probably thought it a good idea for the BB to do the same. They cut it roughly six month after the original (7/16/63 - 3/3/64) The version, which has a slightly longer fade (2'11 - 2'18) was never released, though. It only saw the light of day on the LDC/SD Vol.2 twofer in 1990 and was pressed the same year as a limited vinyl 45 for the German Fanclub "California Saga" backed with "Land Ahoy" (mispelled Land Ahoi on the label) Capitol mms 6003. A year later it was officially relased on a 3 track 45 accompanied by the English language version and "I get around"(Capitol 006-2044777). |

Re: Big Star [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 16 Oct 2008 03:44 AM CDT I've never heard Third/Sister Lovers, but have the first two on a twofer and think it's great. Especially No.1 Record. I agree, they are really well produced records! They remind me of life when I was growing up in a way I can't quite put my finger on. They are quite a bit older than me(I'm 37), but there is some indescribable flavor in their music that I remember from my youth, and few bands do that kind of thing to me. I love your second paragraph. I have the same feelings with some bands. Hüsker Du's 'Warehouse, Songs And Stories' is a case in point. Or early REM (REM more or less ended for me with 'Document'. 'The End Of The World' heralded The End Of REM as an intimate, mystical band, and paved the way to stadiums). |
Re: Pet Sounds DCC Gold CD? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 16 Oct 2008 03:38 AM CDT 1974 - May, to be more precise. Brother-Reprise MS 2197 Thanks AGD, as ever. Hadn't played it for a long time and it's out of reach at the mo. |
Re: Tallahassee Lassie [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 16 Oct 2008 03:37 AM CDT I'm with you, Dada. For as flawed as 15 Big Ones is, and for as easily as it could've been improved (the easiest being better track selection), I still enjoy listening to it. I always find something(s) that I like or that impresses me. And I will always defend Brian's production of the album; I really like the "sound" of the songs. I still consider it in some ways to be his Phil Spector/rock and roll album. The 15 Big Ones/Love You 2fer CD is one of my most played. Same here. It's not even a 'guilty pleasure'. It's brilliant and somehow is a very honest reflection of a group of men not too far from their forties who rose to fame with a brilliant catalogue and refuse to tread solely on past glories. For, one can absolutely say that 15BO/LY is NOT an attempt to endlessly repeat said glories. 15BO is, as I pointed out, lovely, silly, odd, embarrassing, surprising... but not dishonest. And Love You is even more so on all counts. |
Re: why does nobody want to say The Beach Boys these days [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 16 Oct 2008 03:30 AM CDT A thought... From Heartical Don: "...with enormous alimony obligations... ". I feel quite certain that HD said this in jest, based on his other observations of the band, although many others take this to heart. Mike has, I think, been married six times and the last marriage was to Jacqui about 15 years ago. I seriously doubt that Mike has ANY alimony obligations at this stage and situation in his life. I did. Tks for pointing it out. |

Re: why does nobody want to say The Beach Boys these days [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 15 Oct 2008 10:14 PM CDT I think SJS was joking... (tough crowd) Yeah, I was gonna put a at the end but I gave the readers more credit. Silly me... Eh, I've seen plenty of just as/if not more ridiculous defences of Mike AND Brian online before, and they were serious; it's hard to tell sometimes... |

Re: why does nobody want to say The Beach Boys these days [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 15 Oct 2008 09:23 PM CDT To call this band - i.e. Mike, Bruce and a bunch of strangers - 'The Beach Boys' when Dennis and Carl are dead, and Al and Brian no longer wish to be involved would be disrespectful to their former bandmates, as if they were negating their contribution. I think Mike & Bruce are smart and generally respectful enough of the legacy of work they achieved together as The Beach Boys to realise this. |

Re: why does nobody want to say The Beach Boys these days [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 15 Oct 2008 09:22 PM CDT Hey don't blame Mike 100% for doing whatever he does to the band's name. Brian and Al's camp could choose not to okay the Lovester to license the name could they not? Yes, they could. But then there's the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ |

Re: why does nobody want to say The Beach Boys these days [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 15 Oct 2008 09:20 PM CDT If Paul McCartney toured with Ringo Starr or George Martin or Yoko Ono in tow, could it be billed as The Beatles? No. To much respect for the trademark and the legacy to even think about it. |
Re: Ok Seriosuly... [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 15 Oct 2008 09:18 PM CDT Has anyone been over at the blue board* in the past few days. Celebrity gossip site TMZ posted an article about Brian, and I'm gonna be honest..it was pretty funny, something like 'help him, Rhonda please' ha ha. If you genuinely find that funny, all I can say is it must be a world of hilarity and mirth for you. Snapping a covert picture of a notoriously shy 66 year old guy with brain damage in order to make fun of him anonymously from behind a computer screen while he tries to enjoy a quiet evening out. Hilarious, and what stones they must have too. Glad to see they're finally picking on someone who deserves it too - what's that senile old fat Brian Wilson motherfucker ever done for anyone that warrants a bit of respect and privacy? |
