Yes-I just checked the sources again and it was taped July 25 1984-so I will change it

Is this any different than the commonly-circulated bootleg?

I'm not sure. It sounds like Al's vocals are more upfront than Carl's, but I can't remember if it's different from the recordings that circulates as a boot. I should have to check that out.

Re: Stars In The Sky [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I do. Let me explain. Stars In The Sky consisted of Dan and David Kessel (sons of Wrecking Crew member and jazz guitarist Barney Kessel), and they released one (1) great double A-sided single in 1977 or so. It was on the 'Stars In The Sky' label, and had 'Baby Hold On' as the A-side (a beautiful uptempo thing, with faintly rockabilly verses and a superb BBs/Spector chorus. The B-side was 'Love (Oh What A Feeling)', slower, and equally great.
I bought it in the sales around that time, for about € 0.15. Money well spent. I am quite sure that numerous session pros are on it, and that Earle Mankey was an engineer. The sound is worthy of Spector himself.
It is one of the great riddles of pop that this did not chart, nor lead to more. One of the single's sides later was shortly revived for a comp LP on Bomp, and the band was re-christened as The Martians.
Anyone know more?

Yes, I have this BOMP compilation, called "Waves (An Anthology Of New Music Vol. 2)". The Kessel Brothers, calling themselves Dan Phillips and David Scott for this release, are playing all instruments - so no session pros on this one. The engineer was Doc Siegel, not Earle Mankey.
Nevertheless, a great power pop song. Reminds me of Dwight Twilley or The Flamin´ Groovies.

Thanks Chris! Is this Bomp LP still available in some form? My single's a bit worn, you know...

Disappointing album, but underrated in the same breath.

Good description! I think 15 Big Ones would make a fascinating Stack O' Tracks album.

...is the right answer. I brought this up before: during the time we waited for the 2004 SMiLE, a guy named Peter C. spoke about a private listening session (with Linett, or Boyd, or Desper) to the instrumental backing tracks of 15 Big Ones, on high-end equipment. He raved and raved, so good  was it, he thought. I think a SOT (Stack 'O' Tracks I mean...) version of it should be in the shops before Xmas. The public has a right to know, esp. in times of financial crisis.

If you're saying  "... Japan" was the last good released (non-box set/comp) BB track, then I will agree with that.

I have all the versions of Pet Sounds on cd and the best version is the DCC. The 40th Anniversary mono mix sounds better than the 1996/1999 mono mix, but still sounds processed and like its coming out of a tin can. The warmth ain't there.

One police officer who found the noise so loud, stuck a bullet in each ear as ear plugs.
At first I thought you meant he shot himself, hahaha.

Re: What did Johnny Rivers DO? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I don't have children, but I have a girlfriend. And I don't want this to come out the wrong way or anything, but often when I'm being cutesy with her there's that whole "baby" thing going on. "I want to pick you up, rock and back and forth and make you smile," that's the epitome of how I feel about her. I think it works both ways, though. Love is love, whether it's man-woman love or parent-child love.

Speaking of "Talk To Me", was this a song Brian did because it had special meaning for Marilyn and him?  The reason I wonder is because, in the Spring version of "Good Time", there's the line "Hey, baby, turn up the radio - the DJ just said he's playin' our favorite song - Talk To Me"...

I get sick of that kind of stuff too. "Child brides"? It's cleverly written. And IWTPYU, I agree with Dave. Same with all the others. Brian sometimes writes from a teenage point of view because that how he thinks he got the hits, by appealing to a teenage audience. He didn't think in the 70s - with Mike probably badgering him for old-style hits too - that anyone wanted to hear about the P.O.V. of guys in their thirties. And he's right: Bob Ezrin went through the Wall deleting references to Rogers Waters' age, citing that "people don't want to hear about old [sic] rock stars." Waters was 36.

That's all Brian ever does. Roller Skating Child doesn't mean he wants to screw a teenager. Mick Jagger wasn't born in a crossfire hurricane either; he was born in Dartford. And John Lennon? Actually a human, not a walrus; he and the Beatles didn't live in a yellow submarine either, but in big houses. It's songwriting.

Like blues giant Willie Dixon said, "Those people who said Spoonful was about heroin? They just have heroin ideas, I guess."

I disagree. First I have to ask if you ever had a daughter? That song came out just when my own daughter was old enough to start doing things on her own. A happy and yet sometimes sad time for me which the song related to at the time.  I NEVER read anything else into IWTPYU from day one. And Tomboy? It's so real life lyrical Beach Boys lifestyle work that just made common sense to me all along. Why can't these Beach Boy songs be looked upon on their own merit? Life. Without a twisted view.

Fascinating footage.  According to Bellagio 10452, this was originally broadcast 12/23/64, the date of Brian's breakdown on an airplane.  It was filmed either the 14th or 21st of December.

Wasn't this a Shindig episode? I swear I remember the Shindig guy (can't remember his name) introducing the BB during Little Saint Nick.

Yeah it's from Shindig.. I'm not sure if it's from the same episode as when they did Little Saint Nick and Johnny B. Goode.

The disc itself credits: B. Wilson - M. Love - J. Rieley.  The enclosed booklet says: Composer/Brian Wilson;
Lyrics/Mike Love; Additional lyrics by Mike Love.

No Jack Rieley in the booklet.

Thanks AGD, I didn't have the faintest idea. I always believe the credits.

Including the "Funky Pretty" songwriting credits on the 1990 Holland CD? Smiley

Who does it credit?

I was thinking more of when it was taped. Even for the Beach Boys in the '80s, flying from DC to Miami to LA and performing at each stop is a bit of a reach. I could be wrong, however....

Agreed - the last worthwhile track the band recorded. No excuses required.

*Better than Soul Searchin' and Still A Mystery?

*I expect AGD to disagree with this, but  the two Paley songs were the last worthwhile tracks the band recorded.
