Re: New promofilm of POB! [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jun 2008 05:40 AM CDT Someone help me find the connection to POB here... Well, lets see. Its a promotion film done fairly well of Dennis Wilson mostly featuring his solo works of Pacific Ocean Blue. Could it be any more related?!? He states to go to Amazon.com. Its right on the main page for the album, not hard to find. Is that enough help? Woah, settle down there. I actually got confused at first cause I clicked on Anders website and thought that he was talking about a video from his site cause he actually doesn't state to go to Amazon, he just says that he found it on Amazon. He could've reposted it at his site somehow? Anyway, here is the link for anyone who can't find it: http://www.amazon.com/Pacific-Ocean-Blue-Dennis-Wilson/dp/B00104CIN2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1212741243&sr=8-1

Re: Jerry Cole has passed away [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jun 2008 04:38 AM CDT Jerry Cole, 68; guitarist, songwriter recorded surf music albums From a Times Staff Writer June 6, 2008 Jerry Cole, a guitarist and songwriter who released several surf music albums in the 1960s and recorded with prominent bands such as the Beach Boys and the Byrds, died of a heart attack May 28 at his Corona home, said his wife, Gale. He was 68. With his own group, the Spacemen, Cole released four albums of "space-age surf music" in just over two years, beginning with "Outer Limits" in 1963, according to the Allmusic Internet database. Cole was a member of producer Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew studio collective, a group of musicians who played on many pop hits in the 1960s. Cole can be heard on the Beach Boys' 1966 album "Pet Sounds," the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man" single and the band Them's self-titled 1965 album. Born Jerald Edward Kolbrak on Sept. 23, 1939, in Green Bay, Wis., Cole moved to Los Angeles and joined the Champs in 1959 after the instrumental quintet had recorded the chart-topping "Tequila." Fellow band members included Glen Campbell as well as Jimmy Seals and Dash Crofts, who became successful as the duo Seals and Crofts in the 1970s. On television, Cole led the pit bands for the mid-1960s rock-'n'-roll-oriented shows "Shindig" and "Hullabaloo." He also cut a number of instrumental rock albums under a variety of names. Cole went in a country-rock direction after session work with Roger Miller and country singers Chuck Howard and Susie Allanson, Allmusic reported. In 2004, Cole was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. In addition to Gale, whom he married in 1984, Cole is survived by daughters Monique and Katrina and a son, Cane. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. June 28 at Corona Christian Center, 1901 W. Ontario Ave., Corona. news.obits@latimes.com

Re: Good Vibrations rap [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jun 2008 02:40 AM CDT I believe (and someone will tell us if i'm wrong!) that it's referred to as a sample if it actually contains a piece of the original recording as originally released, and it's considered an interpolation if they re-recorded part of the original song instead of just lifting a loop off the recording. Plus of course you know Brian likes making rap songs out of his Beach Boys songs. Then there are "real" samples in this rap song - in the verses, when you hear just the "I...", it's the 1966 version, with Carl's voice and the original organ.
Re: 1981 Hotel Tape [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jun 2008 01:11 AM CDT Ahhhhhhhhh, this tape. This has been going around for years. It's been bundled together on some boots with the "cocaine tapes". This tape was made in December of 1981 in San Carlos, CA. The band had played a show earlier in the evening (recorded in the audience), with Brian, Mike, Al, and Bruce being the members in attendance. The show was, as many other 1981 shows were, horrible. Bruce remarked before I Write The Songs that he would dedicate the song to Dennis, who was "probably in his hotel somewhere throwing up". Dennis was indeed ill this night, presumably from food poisoning. Brian was in mildly good spirits this night. His singing on the show was decent enough considering how bad of a shape he was in, except for a godawful moment on Sloop John B where he pinched his nose to "hit the high notes", so to speak. The live tape is one of the easiest to find. My copy of the interview is labelled, simply, "Les Chan". For those of you who frequent the forums, this name pops up a lot.

1981 Hotel Tape [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jun 2008 12:56 AM CDT I recently heard a tape of Brian being interviewed in his hotel room by 2 pretty knowledgable fans circa 1981. I've seen this reffered to as the "Hotel Room Interview" and also as 'Brian talks to some nerds" on various tape lists. Can anyone shed some light on this fascinating recording for me (who, what, when, why). The best part for me is when Brain calls Dennis' room to try and hook the guys up with an autograph. Dennis refuses because he's too sick. Fly on the wall stuff.
Re: The Beach Boys - Endless Harmony [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jun 2008 12:32 AM CDT I gave it four. I think I have a nostalgic bias towards "An American Band" though Me, too. I was lucky to see "American Band" in a theater back in 1985. Made a lasting impression. This is a good one, though. Much more in depth interviews from the band members. The post Sunflower/ Surf's Up years sure fly by fast, but this is the best so far at telling the story of the Beach Boys.
Re: Imagination [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jun 2008 12:08 AM CDT You're not alone. I have no complaints about the production on this or IJWMFTT, but I've been told repeatedly that both are "too Adult Contemporary sounding, they don't sound like Brian Wilson". At the same time, I'm being told that the production on the 1988 solo album is "too synthy". Honestly, I don't know what people want.

Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 05 Jun 2008 11:24 PM CDT http://youtube.com/watch?v=2HPvAXvpLq4 This is video of Van Dyke Parks conducting an amazing arrangement for the song "Yellow Magic Carnival". He is funny to watch, with all kinds of goofy, exuberant mannerisms. Really into the music. It proves he still has it even today.

Good Vibrations rap [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 05 Jun 2008 10:16 PM CDT http://cdbaby.com/cd/mrdoctor2 In my endless web searches for all things Beach Boys-related, I came across this... a rap song that samples Good Vibrations. Though could this be called a sample? It does not use the Beach Boys recording but instead has Adrian Baker (billed as "Adrian Baker of the Beach Boys") singing Carl's part. I don't know whether I want to suddenly respect Adrian Baker or punch him in the face for this, this song that would make Brian Wilson roll over in his grave if he weren't still alive. Call it a guilty pleasure for me.
Re: POB Article [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 05 Jun 2008 10:14 PM CDT I noticed the inaccuracies too (Little Bird on Smiley Smile) and it usually bothers me, but the thought is really in this article. "Wouldn't it be nice to live again?" Dennis sang on another heartbreaking song, cut from Surf's Up and never yet released. In a sense, he now will. " Probably the best thing I've read on the reissue.

Re: Big Bag of Vegetables 9-disk set??? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 05 Jun 2008 09:52 PM CDT On the official Beach Boys box set that had the five or six 'SMiLE' releases on it, does anybody recall where the middle section of DYLW came from? It's where the 'Bicycle Rider' section would have gone, except this section sounds slightly warped (I think it sounds almost like a mellotron with Brian chanting over it-'oom dada'). I seem to recall someone saying it came from a box that had different little bits on it, but I can't recall what it was-doesn anybody know? The "Warped" section is a mastering defect by Capitol, which causes the tape to drag(I.E. slow down) at 2 places. I don't know if I would call it a mastering error. There was probably a tape drag and they decided not to fix it digitally. It is interesting that that section isn't on any of the boots. Where did you get that from?
