Great stuff!

I'm a bit confused, though -- I thought the "Time For Bed" track originated as "New Orleans", not "Down In Mexico"?  Which one's "New Orleans", then?

Cheers,
Jon Blum

"New Orleans" apparently is the name given to it by bootleggers, based on the sound of the track.
From what I gather, Dennis never used that title.

2 weeks ago I ordered a German copy of the Holland-album. Which I did for one reason only: the seller made it very clear that is was a first pressing...

Got it last week, and - indeed - it IS the first pressing: We Got Love is on it.  Smiley

Surf Music : Most detrimental/criminal events [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 05:40 AM CDT

Some of the most detrimental/'criminal'   events occurring within the 'surf music' genre:

The string over-dubs on 'Surfer's Choice'.
Dick Dale signing with Capitol.
Gary Usher producing The Surfaris.
Eddie & The Showmen never releasing an album.
The Beach Boys hitting the charts.
The photo shoot for the sleeve of Annette's Muscle Beach Party Lp.
Vern Acree Jr & The Blazers only releasing 2 singles….

I'm sure there must be more...

By the way, I wish I could change my vote. I gave this a 3, it's definitely at least a 4.

The only for drawback about Smiley Smile (for me) is that "Good Vibrations" seems very out of place on it.  I know they had to include it.  In the days of cassettes, I threw in "You're Welcome" and "Mama Says" and pulled GV, and I liked it much more.
You know how when you listen to an album so much you know the sequence of all the songs and when a song from an album ends you hear the next one in your head, even if it doesn't play?

I never really listened to Good Vibrations until I got Smiley Smile (my third Beach Boys album, after Pet Sounds and Little Deuce Coupe, and the first one that made me a fan). So now, whenever I'm listening to radio or a compilation or something, and I'm listening to the studio version of Good Vibrations, and it ends, the first thing I hear in my head is "On and on she go, dumby doo da, on and on she go dumby doo". Whenever I think of Good Vibrations, it's in the context of it being a Smiley Smile album track.

Brian Wilson To Appear On Yahoo Music [Smiley Smile Dot Net]

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 04:41 AM CDT

Brian is reported to be appearing on the Yahoo Music web site on September 1st.

clipped from www.latimes.com
Another key element of the Yahoo series, now in its second year, is a Q&A between fans and performer that typically comes midway through each set. Questions are vetted by the show's producers, and they aren't always voiced by the fans who submitted them. But the results can be wildly unpredictable.
At last week's Brian Wilson taping (to be posted Sept. 1), a fan asked what he regretted most. Wilson responded straightforwardly with a laundry list of the drugs he'd used. "They messed with my brain," he said, "so I regret that."

Still waiting for a vintage "I know Brian's dad" pin button  Grin

I've said it before- this has always been number one on my list of holy relics.

Until one of those turns up, we must all bow down to Jonathan's signed MMOM LP- an amazing item.  I'll bet the only way to harm it would be throw it into the fire at Mount Doom.  An army that bears that before them cannot be defeated.

Not Beach Boys related, but I've got an inscribed copy of Criswell Predicts

Re: Paley Sessions, your opinions... [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Hello y'all -

I like the Paley sessions a lot. In 1995, they got a lot of attention in the UK press and quickly acquired a high status; it was suggested that Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas would collaborate eventually on the finishing work to be done still. That was not to be.
Why do I like them? Not because every song is a classic. But at the time they carried a lot of hope with them. For instance, Brian's voice on some of the tracks sounded truly like his '60s best, without the raspy, coarse side-effects of cigarettes and cocaine in it; and neither does it sound 'thin' like it does on 'Brian Wilson' and 'Sweet Insanity'.
Plus: I think 'This Song Wants To Sleep...' is outstanding, just as 'GIOMH' and a couple of others.
Why did he and Paley separate eventually? I was at the London RFH 'Pet Sounds' live show in 2002, was Paley present there in his touring ensemble?

Wow! That's pretty nice.

I have to admit that there are things on this album I quite like!  Wink

What's it say above the signature?

Like Shut down Part II but can't stand Denny's Drums. That alone brings Shut Down a full notch for me.

Wow!  This is a fabulous recording.  I really like the demo version of this song, but this version is significantly better.  Great blending of BWs vocals with the other band members.  Sure, the singing (or lip-syncing) on the video clip often fails to match the song, but who cares?  For many, many years now, BW's leads have often way too grating to my ear, and I've always wondered why they don't blend the rest of the band more into his vocals.  They've done it big time here, and the result is a much more enjoyable listening experience, in my opinion.  Hope the vocal blends (and probably pitch corrections too) on the rest of the album have been done this well.

As I was familiar with the BWPS tracks before I heard this album I tend to discount them. Certainly I think the live DVD version of Smile contains some of the definitive versions of these - perhaps with the exception of windchimes, which is a  brooding presence here on smiley smile, rather than being digitalised and perhaps a bit too clean.

Overall, the album lacks a bit of swagger and groove. Wild Honey sort of compensated afterwards. The vibe is a wrecked-out kind of calm. Half the songs are like incantations. The fundamentalist Christians who see the Beach Boys as a Satanic influence would be able to make this their first article of evidence. Especially if you spiked them first. Not sure if anyone knows of a Daevid Allen album, "The Death of Rock"... with the same sparse organ accompaniment.

What is inimitable though, are the tunes, which at their best (Little Pad, Whistle In, With Me Tonight) sound like works of effortless brilliance. That's what genius is, I guess. The lack of overall momentum can make the album seem a bit ponderous. But I'd give it a 5, as it's drenched in something very special.  classic, understated psychedelia

Well, the GIOMH version is the Paley version, you know. The credits don't state it, but it's the same backing track and backing vocals.

It just has a newly recorded lead.

Ditto for Soul Searchin, except that Brian recorded new backing vocals and Mertens played a sax solo -- god knows why.

Listen to the GIOMH "SS" on headphones. Maybe two small percussion overdubs excepted, it's a mono track.

Is it me or did they lower the pitch to this song on the GIOMH version?

It pops up during , I think, a H&V session.

I've often heard it mentioned that the "Saturday Morning in the City" riff was conceived in the late 1960s.  Is there any sort of demo material from that time period that exists of this song, or do we know it was from the 1960s because Brian says so?

Re: Newly posted: \ [Smiley Smile Message Board]

It's a tad more rocky but still melodic and with harmonies so its not an all out affair. I like it in the second verse where there are some Toms going on, sounds a bit glammish to me, like the Sweet!

Well, I seem to recall that Christopher Cross was considered for the Jeff Foskett role (he did it at the Imagination promo concerts in St. Charles), but he ended up devoting more time to his solo career.

And certainly there have been fill-ins who have come and gone. Gary Griffin has subbed for Darian fairly regularly the last couple of years, and Billy Hinsche has filled in as well.

But it seems like it was a pretty ad hoc group of people who were thrown together for a few shows in 1999. What's shocking is that the core of Foskett, Darian, Nicky, Probyn, Scott, Taylor and Paul (and until this year, Lizik and Hines) have stuck together for so long!

We WILL Have World Peace [Smiley Smile Dot Net]

Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich's A WORLD OF PEACE MUST COME is finally going to be released.

clipped from www.uncut.co.uk
An album of poetry and sparse music arrangements co-produced by Brian Wilson and Stephen John Kalinich in 1966 has to come to light, and will be released in October.
Kalinich was the first artist to be signed to Beach Boy's Brother Records label, and recorded the album 'A World Of Peace Must Come' over the course of one night at Brian Wilson's Bel Air house. However the recorded tapes were lost, only found 20 years after, and a release finally possible now through Light In The Attic Records.

A World Of Peace Must Come will be accompanied with a booklet of all of Kalinich's poems, as well as liner notes by Beach Boys archivist Alan Boyd.

The album is set for release on October 6.

“It was done like a home recording,” Stevie tells Undercover News. “Brian co-produced it with me. We started it around ‘69 after talking about it in ’68”.

The album was Stevie’s idea. “I had it as a concept and recorded some of it myself and then I brought it to Brian. He did ‘America I Love You’ with me first”.

Stevie has fond memories of the recording sessions. “I loved making it,” he tells Undercover. “”We had a blast and fun. We recorded most of it at Brian’s house but we went to other studios like Wally Heider and Sunset Sound to work on parts of it. I have fond memories and it was as important today as the day we recorded it”.

Guard Me, Rhonda [Smiley Smile Dot Net]

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 09:59 PM CDT

Go behind the scenes and learn about one of the hardest jobs you could ever take on: security guard at a Beach Boys concert.

But the estimated 12,500 people around me didn't seem to need that much securing. They ranged from the woman in the low-cut top who kept sauntering up the aisle, once blowing kisses at the musicians, to the group in the front who rolled their eyes at her act. If she was in her early 20s, they were twice her age and then some. One carried a cane.

The other guys wearing the yellow shirts told me our job is to help people have a good time, more customer service than security. They told me to be polite but firm when I asked people lingering in the aisles to find their seats.

"Mostly you have to be a good listener," said Travis McKenna, head of security for the Grandstand Arena. "You're here to help."
