In "Add Some Music" Vol. 7, No. 1 (Winter 1984) Brian Gari wrote:

"When I was 13 years  old, I starterd writing to my idols - songwriters. I had been writing songs myself for a year by that time and wanted to contact the most unacknowledged people behind a hit song, the writers. Murry Wilson was one such person, having written a really good song for The Sunrays, entitled "Bye Bye Baby". I offer you his letter, which I believe, has some interesting surprises."

Quote from Murry´s answer:

"... in my opinion Brian´s best songs are "The Warmth Of The Sun", "In My Room" and a beautiful instrumental on the "Summer Days" album. I am writing lyrics to this beautiful instrumental and The Sunrays will record it in their first album"

Not sure but he wrote Add Some Music in 1979 I think and had them print Murry's letter. It was very polite.

Thanks for the info MBE. Is there anywhere that I can find this publication? Isn't there a book called that which is a collection of old articles etc.. Sorry if I'm way off I'm not familiar with the publication. What else does Murry's letter basically say?

Hmm I haven't read the book all the way through yet. Interesting quote but something like that should have a source.

Yeah I hate when people just use quotes and don't reference it. That's the biggest problem with a book like "In Their Own Words"... I mean they use 'that' quote from Mike: "Don't foda with formula" but when has that ever been proven to have been said? Of course I'm not doubting that Lennon said this but it'd be nice to know where it was taken from.

I think you can trace Brian having problems to 1963. He was gaining a little weight (he was into health food in high school) and refusing to tour. I don't think he completely changed his personality for over a decade, and perhaps not completely until the second Landy regeme but you can trace the first minor warning signs that early. Though Brian did have a brief stay in 1968, I still think that overall he was a lot more normal from 67-70 or 71 then he ever would be again as far as awareness of things going on around him, sense of humor, obviously quality of work etc.

I was just wondering what is the deal with Brian Gari? Until recently I thought the only thing he had to do with anything in relation to the Beach Boys was record a tribute album - Brian Sings Wilson - but I just came across this in the book Inside The Music Of Brian Wilson on page 210:

"in a letter to Brian Gari in 1965, Murry claims to have been working on a lyric for the melody of 'Summer Means New Love.' Gari himself wrote a lyric for the song and released his full vocal version...on his 2002 CD Brian Gari Sings Brian Wilson"

So I was just wondering. Did he actually know Brian or any of the boys (to some degree) back in the 60's? I know he may just be a minor footnote in Beach Boys history but did he have anything else to do with the Beach Boys throughout the years? Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me any info.

I was just wondering if someone could help me by telling me where this John Lennon quote comes from?

Taken from page 218 of Inside The Music Of Brian Wilson:

"This is the greatest! Turn it up, turn it right up. It's GOT to be a hit. It's the greatest record I've heard for weeks. It's fantastic. I hope it will be a hit. It's all Brian Wilson. He just uses the voices as instruments. He never tours or does anything. He just sits at home thinking up fantastic arrangements out of his head. Doesn't even read music. You keep waiting for the fabulous breaks. Great arrangement. It goes on and on with all different things. I hope it's a hit so I can hear it all the time."

DoveNest, I find it so hard to understand which parts you wrote there and which parts Mark H. wrote, because they're both inside Mark's quote box.

Sorry, I don't know how that happened. I messed it up somehow. Just the top couple lines were a quote of Mark H.

The rest was my answer to his challenge. What it boils down to is that anecdote doesn't trump peer-reviewed science. Peer-reviewed science currently indicates that some first generation antipsychotics cause TD and in some cases it's permanent.  Dr. H apparently disagrees with the National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Mental Health on this issue. What can you say to that?

Mark, congratulations on your recent Board Certification and thanks for your service to hospice patients. That's damned important work. I mean that sincerely.

Kurt Cobain was a genius.

This guy...not so much so. More like Daniel Johnston minus both the psychosis and the talent. I can do a better version of Caroline No.
