| Re: Picking apart the bonus tracks on the POB reissue [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 07 Jul 2008 06:09 AM CDT I must be in the minority but the L.A. Light version of Love Surrounds Me sounds more finished to me. I'm with you on that one, but I like this version very much too. The only track I don't care that much for is "Album tag", although the part where Dennis sings is great. I absolutely love "Tug of love". I can understand that it wasn't used on the album, but it would've made a great single or B-side. When I hear the opening chords I feel like I'm in California, or as I never been to Cal., like what I imagine it to be. It would've been a great Beach Boys record too. It's just magical. I wished that even when Bambu wasn't finished, some singles would've been released. | ||

| Re: Brother Records YouTube Copyright Claims [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 07 Jul 2008 03:09 AM CDT How does that work? Does BRI just e-mail YouTube and it gets taken down immediately and your account removed, or does YouTube investigate? My understanding is that the copyright holders themselves have to show proof that they do own the rights to the material, not just anybody. So, that might take some time to prove that they do own the rights to the material. Does YouTube give you a warning and ask you to remove the video first, or do they just take it down and notify you after the fact (or do they even notify you at all that you violated the rules and are taking down a video you posted and/or suspending your account)? | ||
| Re: Picking apart the bonus tracks on the POB reissue [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 07 Jul 2008 03:01 AM CDT I think he made the right decision about using End Of Show over Tug Of Love though. Wasn't it instead of Farewell My Friend? | ||

| Re: New US singles box-set [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 11:42 PM CDT Well from what Alan Boyd reports and the discussion here it sounds like the most likely scenario was CG was mastered and faded for 45 at the longer length, but when the copy of the original mix tape was made and the song inserted into the LP master reel, it was re-EQ'd and faded somewhat more quickly. Can you please give a link to where Alan Boyd discusses this? | ||
| Re: \ [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 11:32 PM CDT I bet meeting Brian would be very different in different periods. I knew someone who met him in 1964 and said he seemed like an intellectual. Articulate and brainy. I heard a story about someone who met him in 1970 or so. Said he was very normal and nice but that he was wearing a suit at Tower Records which they thought a little odd for the era. Knew a lady who knew him in the late 70's said he was nice but rather odd and shy. It seemes he used to be a lot talkative and aware of his surroundings overall. | ||
| Re: Picking apart the bonus tracks on the POB reissue [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 11:28 PM CDT Some of those unreleased and unbooted songs are really good. I really like Time For Bed and Love Remember Me. I think he made the right decision about using End Of Show over Tug Of Love though. Only With You is nice, Are You Real has a fantastic ending. It's weird hearing how much slower the masters of It's Not Too Late and Under The Moonlight are compared to the boot. I like them very much either way but it took me a few plays to get used to it. I wish Wild Situation had the "dirty ending" and the now now now now now part. It's really cool to hear it all mixed together though with the backing vocals. I must be in the minority but the L.A. Light version of Love Surrounds Me sounds more finished to me. Nice to have All Alone on vinyl. | ||

That stuff happens. I guess the EQs and fades to the tracks on the LP tape reels were set and then applied on the fly while the mother disc for each side was being cut? Is that your understanding Josh and Alan? Another good example of this (besides the bazillion Beatles record anomalies chronicled elsewhere in the world and the stereo vs. mono arguments on everything 60s-related) is the recent reissue of Cream's "Disraeli Gears" with mono and stereo mixes. For some reason the mono mixes are a couple of seconds longer.

| Re: \ [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 09:47 PM CDT I had the odd luck of getting to help shoot a TV spot for an upcoming BB concert in Washington--they were in my hometown of Des Moines at the time, and we went down and taped them at one of the oldest hotels in town, where they were staying. This was the summer of 1985, and they were playing at the State Fair. (Saw that gig--the only one thus far!) Got to meet Bruce, Al, and Mike. Though we were there from 2-4pm, Carl was still asleep, so...no Carl. Bruce was the first to arrive, and was very upbeat and friendly. Al was next...he was OK, but kinda cranky. Didn't like the hotel room, kinda complained about everything around him. Mike was also OK...very quiet. Hardly said a word. Just did his lines and vanished (meaning, the script, that is!) I ran into Brian several other times, most notably in the elevator of the KROQ building where I worked at the time...this would be 1988, right after his solo album came out. I was visiting a DJ at KROQ, and Brian and Kevin Leslie got into the elevator at the same time as me. I almost didn't recognize him, he was in such great physical shape, and very very handsome. The thing that tipped me off was the twitching at the corner of the mouth. I know it doesn't seem likely that a big Brian fan wouldn't recognize him right off the bat, but keep in mind, he hadn't been out much publicly until just that year! Also saw Brian headed for the porta potties at the Topanga Canyon acoustic concert--he seemed GIANT. And he had the most powerful voice of the day, though he stumbled through a lot of lyrics! Saw VD Parks backstage at the Pet Sounds Hollywood Bowl concert, but didn't approach him...he had a circle of well-wishers around him, hugging him, and I didn't want to interrupt. | ||
| Picking apart the bonus tracks on the POB reissue [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 09:33 PM CDT This is a thread for discussion about JUST the bonus tracks on the POB reissue. IMO the liners, as great as they are, were rather light on details about the bonus material. Jon (Stebbins that is), you mentioned earlier that in the tape research for the POB reissue that many piano "demos" or run-throughs of many tracks were found. Was the Piano Variations track on the reissue one such demo or run-through, or was this an attempt at an actual song? And what else is known about Album Tag? Brad Elliott listed a cryptic date (5/12/77 I believe) of recording but nothing else is known about it. It sounds like a voice/piano track that Dennis later stuck between two heavy synth/percussion segments. The "lyrics" sound like Dennis just improvising with words as he noodles on the piano. Is there any more info on this one? | ||
| Re: What was Carl up to 1975-1978? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 07:26 PM CDT I understand that the backing vocal credit was all that was given... however, I had read before that his contribution the song was considerable.. and surprising to the rest of Chicago.... mind you that article was many years ago ( maybe even a kasey kasem top 40 snigglet) so i'm no expert... I differ to you AGD... you would have a better idea... | ||

[Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 05:25 PM CDT Re: What was Carl up to 1975-1978? would his work with Chicago ("Baby What a Big Surprise") rank in this area? I don'y know how much of that was wrote by Carl..but I thought that his contributions to that were large ( but uncredited) His contribution was a backing vocal - that's all. | Re: New US singles box-set [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 03:45 PM CDT Consider this - why would Brian decided to (almost imperceptably) remix one track on an LP when he could just strip the single master into the tape ? "CG" was recorded during the album sessions, released a week after the LP. I know this is The Beach Boys we're talking about here, but even so, makes no sense. I suppose that it's possible that Brian (or someone else) took the single mix and copied it to another reel while shortening the fade. To me, it seems likely that there is a "single" version and an "LP" version in the vaults. The Japanese singles box set and Greatest Hits Vol. 1 both have the 2:47 version, which is the version that was originally released on 45. The version on the US Singles Collection is identical to the version on Summer Days (and Summer Nights), so regardless of whether the mix is different or not ( I think it is), technically there is a single version and an LP version.
| Re: New US singles box-set [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 03:33 PM CDT I thought the Fun, Fun, Fun single had a longer fadeout. Yes the album version fades out incredibly early compared to the single one. No, the difference is merely one second. The mono LP mix is 2:16 long, the single mix 2:17. You are probably confusing this with the stereo LP mix which fades out several seconds earlier. | ||

| Re: \ [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 03:00 PM CDT But it has been a true blessing to be able to have met and talked with so many involved with the BB-related touring groups. Eric, that's great, thanks for sharing all those wonderful stories. The way you're able to get backstage and other interesting places (restrooms!), you oughta be an undercover agent. Glad to see all of your hard work paid off, although it was probably a labor of love.... Thanks! Yeah, the setlist archive started with just an idea that bore out of my tendency to want things organized! I saw setlists all over the internet and I thought that they should be put together in one spot for easy access. There hasn't been any financial compensation for my work on the archive, but the benefits truly are priceless, and I'm very grateful! | ||
| Re: POB debuts in Billboard catalog chart at #8 [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 06 Jul 2008 02:39 PM CDT My preferred version is the live one found on a couple or so boots (Deep Sea Treasures Vol 2 for one), Carl sings the lead, then there's an added coda in which Dennis sings along the lines of "Gonna spend my life with you, makin' love...". There are similarities with the coda on the POB outtake, but the live version is superior in my opinion. I seem to recall someone mentioning that it was intended for Hawthorne CA but pulled... hopefully it'll get a properly mastered official release one day. | ||
