Re: Melinda Wilson or the antichrist? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

One last comment and I am going by memory in the BBC doc Stebbins did Wouldn't It Be Nice, Al made a comment about Brian along the lines of "This is my best friend and I cannot see him".

And that comment is exactly why I don't believe that Brian was ever really isolated from the group, even during the Landy years. And Mike sues Brian all the time. It's the same jealous behaviour since the 60's.

Ha. I take it my question isnt so easily answered? Well, any recommendations on a good book for this kind of thing, then? I realize that any book of this kind might have a few mistakes in it...

Best line I read all month.

At the risk of hurling myself back into this, all we know for sure is that Al was gone after the on stage incident with Brian where he sat down. One last comment and I am going by memory in the BBC doc Stebbins did Wouldn't It Be Nice, Al made a comment about Brian along the lines of "This is my best friend and I cannot see him". Now that was filmed circa 2003 so that only apllies to then. For all I know they could still be friends now.

IN the beginning there were the Wilson Bros. plus David Marks and what's his name.

Then, there was Al. Then there was Bruce.

That much I know.

But I always hear about these other people--Darryl Dragon, Billy Hinsche, for example.

My question is this: Who were the "other Beach Boys" on t heir tours? Names and instruments. And did they play on albums, too?(I realize that there is probably a book that I could get detailing this, somewhere, but I don't know what it is and it would be hard for me to find.)

Easy one - Carol Kaye did it all.  Smiley

7.) She said that Brian's sessions with Andy Paley were good as therapy, but not necessarily as a finished album.

She did? Now this really is a reason to hate someone. Smiley

(18) If she is typing on his behalf...Who cares?

but

Is Al on her Christmas card list? What gives with his departure prior to the tour with Brian?

He looks like Rey Charles with those glasses. I thought he was going to break out and sing "What I'd Say?"  LOL

With the bright camera work, Brian looks strangely like one of the aliens from "Close Encounters of a Third Kind"...kind of appropriate, actually!  I do agree with Jay  that this is a very interesting clip:  Brian is actually emoting with his vocal.  He really sounds invested in the song; he makes a sly lyrical change from "If I've been THE one you love" to "If I've been THAT one you love" giving it a more immediate urgency (if slightly clunky), and even adds a call for "angels! angels!" at the end.  He was probably referring massive acapella harmonies from his bandmates, but it gives the rest of the song a religious vibe.

I wonder what was on his mind the day he performed this?  Good post!

Melinda Wilson or the antichrist? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Not sure about Melinda Wilson? Hate her with a passion? Support her utterly? Hoo boy, this here is the thread for you. We will decide, once and for all, if Brian's current wife is just a human being named Melinda Wilson or ... something darker. Something more evil. Perhaps ... satan?

This started in the thread right below about Marilyn. The thread turned, as these things do, to Melinda. As such, I got to thinking about all the stuff that's been said about the former Miss Ledbetter in the past few years. Here is my list of charges against the current Mrs. Wilson. These are just what I recall from the past decade. Some of them are true, some of them are false, but all support the Satan theory. I don't agree with them, either, but let's have them out in the open. Just for fun. Why not?

1.) Melinda didn't know much about the BBs when she met Brian. We know more about them than she does!

2.) She was a car saleswoman. We all know about them.

3.) Brian at one point wanted a separation from her (this was a couple of years after they married) and she cried. This inspired the song "Cry" on the Imagination album. What kind of devil would cry in front of Brian Wilson?

4.) She manipulated Brian by having them adopt three new children, thus replacing Carnie and Wendy in his thoughts.

5.) Carnie supposedly called her "Melandy" at one point. That obviously has implications of control over Brian. Melinda was also Brian's conservator for several years after their marriage. She's now been referred to as his manager. She has not, so far, requested songwriting credits.

6.) She forced Brian to make an adult contemporary record with Joe Thomas, thus creating an album's worth of music that she liked, not him.

7.) She said that Brian's sessions with Andy Paley were good as therapy, but not necessarily as a finished album.

8.) She forced Brian to rewrite the lyrics to "Sherry She Needs Me" because they were about an old girlfriend. Notice: Controlling and insecure behavior.

9.) She effectively killed off the Carl Wilson cancer benefit by insisting on a "professionally managed" show that was put on solely to keep the Honeys from performing again. She didn't like Brian being around his ex in the years before.

10.) She wanted BW's vocal tracks on the "Live at the Roxy" album double-tracked, thus showing her ignorance of live recordings.

11.) The label name on recent BW recordings has been BriMel -- somewhat less subtle than Brains and Genius.

12.) She interfered with the mix of Pet Sounds live, bringing Brian's voice to the front and smothering the backing vocals and instrumentation. (The DVD does have a substantially different, fuller mix.)

13.) She forced Brian to tour with Pet Sounds.
14.) She forced Brian to tour with Smile.
15.) She's forced Brian to tour the rest of the time.
16.) She forced Brian to record GIOMH

17.) She fired (okay, oversaw the departures of) two longtime band members recently, as well as some touring crew members.

18.) She has impersonated Brian on his message board, deceiving fans.

19.) She has taken too much credit for Brian's musical and personal recovery.

20.) She has unfairly criticized Brian's first wife. And we all know what a saint Marilyn was (or at least Rocky Pamplin knows).

Added, thanks to reader suggestions:

21.) She hoards animals. The Wilson clan has more than a dozen dogs.

22.) She was named in a suit filed by Joe Thomas alleging that she manipulated him and Brian.

Got anything to add? Go ahead! Let's flush 'er out! There's nothing too racy or scurrilous!

Re: BBs changes from 65-73 [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Has there ever been a band that has flipped and flopped as much as the Beach Boys in style and direction from one album to the next? Everything up to SD/SN made a lot of sense. Then you get this illogical proggression...

Party ... Pet Sounds ... Smiley Smile ... Wild Honey ... Friends ... 20/20 ... Sunflower ... Surfs Up ... So Tough ... Holland

Many bands have gone through a change, but has any other band changed from one album to the next like this?!

I like all of these albums, but its no wonder they didn't survive commercially through those years.

Drugs.

But, hey, that's why we love them so. And you could probably add 15 Big Ones to that progression...

Really these rapid changes are what made them such a great group. I love the early stuff, but the music from Pet Sounds to Holland is just as amazing.

Al Jardine At The 2008 California Mid-State Fair [Smiley Smile Dot Net]

Posted: 25 Jul 2008 10:24 PM CDT

Excitement is brewing for Al Jardine's upcoming concert.

Al Jardine’s Endless Summer Band
When: 7:30 p.m. Monday (free)
Though not as well known as some of the other Beach Boys, guitarist Jardine was a founding member. In fact, he first hooked up with band leader Brian Wilson through their high school football team. Considered the “lost Beach Boy” by some, Jardine’s vocals can be heard on songs like “Tell Me Why,” “Cotton Fields” and “Then I Kissed Her.” His most famous vocal, though, is the lead on “Help Me, Rhonda,” one of the band’s best known songs. And, of course, he appeared on all the Beach Boys classics, including “God Only Knows,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “I Get Around.”
Life’s not always a beach:Mike Love owns the rights to the Beach Boys name, and legal action prevents Jardine from using any band name that references the Beach Boys.

More MidState Fair action

This week’s other headliners include Al Jardine’s Endless Summer Band, a grandstand show that’s free with your fair admission. Jardine, you’ll recall, was a member of the Beach Boys, a friend of the Wilson Brothers and their cousin Mike Love. Jardine took over for forgotten Beach Boy David Marks, who was forced out of the band. He enjoyed a long tenure with the Beach Boys until Brian Wilson’s famous meltdown, and now he tours without the Beach Boy name, due to legal wrangling between the various band members, though expect to hear Beach Boys hits all night long on Monday, July 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
