Re: Brian's New Album Cover [Smiley Smile Message Board]

From 15 Big Ones on, all of the Beach Boys album covers were mediocre to horrible. Compared to these, Brian's solo album cover art has been an improvement.

I like the "LA (Light Album)" cover. Twelve postcards by twelve different artists, one for each song, one for the band name and one for the album title. That's a pretty cool concept.

speaking of postcards, check this!!

As long as it isn't John Stamos I would buy it lol.

Has anyone head the recording of "I've Got A Friend" where Mike introduces it as one fo his favorite songs written by anyone ever?

So, I assume it was Mike who prevented the band from ever recording it, right? I mean, it just had to be Mike, right?

Was recorded - well, the track, anyway, during Dennis' 1971 solo sessions. Sadly, no vocals known to exist. The track is a snorter.

now, to stir up the hornet's nest...
why not  Taylor Hawkins ?
we know the basic words and melody

And, most important, Brian certainly wouldn't have appeared for free. Banana

My impression from that era was that the band had no problems with Brian performing, but a helluva lot with the nonsense that went with him turning up. Landy's outlook was very b&w - my way or not at all.

I never heard of them not letting him perform, except for a show in "Brian's" autobiography where he said he showed up drunk without shoes in 1982. That does sound like Eugene though as far as dictating to the others how to run the show.

There were attemps to integrate Brian into the BB live group during the Landy years, but one of the problems was that Brian's management (Landy) wanted a more active, upfront role for Brian, a Mike Love role. No wonder this didn't happen. And Brian himself expressed his disappointment that he would show up for shows, but the boys wouldn't let him perform.

It sure seems that way. Brian may have also expressed less interest. Landy made all of the final decisions.

Re: early 60s-smile era demos? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

The woodwinds version wasn't a demo, it was cut on the second day of Dada sessions May 17 with flutes making bird-like sounds.  The All Day demo (which was Brian on tack piano, playing what became the second part of Dada) was from Jan 3, and it also may have not been a demo - there were multiple numbered takes to get it right.  Brian may have meant to use it in Heroes (all the other stuff he was doing that day was for Heroes) or for some other song, a transition or break or tag of some sort.

I bet this has been mentioned a million times, but when I read "All Day", I started singing to myself "Remember the day, day, remember the night, night, all DAY long!". Was that - which is obviously "Whistle In" (sorta) - supposed to be part of that track?

"Whistle-In" is the 'wahala-lu-lei' riff from "DYLW ?" - well, to these ears, anyway.  Smiley

That's an interesting observation Andrew. I can hear a bit of it's influence in the track.

Whistle In is a SMiLE track too right? I think I remember hearing that it was started in early 1967.

Bit of an influence ? I hear the self same melody. Smiley

The earliest date I have for a "Whistle-In" session is 7/13/67, right at the end of the Smiley Smile recordings.

Going by Eric's setlist archive website, it's always been my impression that Brian more or less "quit" The Beach Boys when Dennis died. If I recall correctly, Eric's website doesn't mention a "post Dennis" show Brian did untill around 1985-6. It seems that as the years went on, Brian performed less and less. Was it a Landy "idea"?

Let's see if we can figure out the tours he was on.
From 61-64 he was on most of the shows save for about May to August 1963 where he may have only played a a handful.
1965 he played maybe 8 to 10.
1966 he was at two and did the encore. 1
1967 he did two whole shows.
1970 he did a tour, a loose gig in the summer? to annoncue the Flame and the Whisky.
1971 He did one show one or two songs.
1973 one shows one song the last time he could sing his original parts well.
1976 he did the two for the TV Special and seems to have been on most of the shows from November to December.
1977-81 it seems he was at around 90 percent of them.
1982 about half?
1983 about 40 percent of them?
1984 I know he did a casino gig early in the year, and July 4th
1985 I know July 4th
1986-88 It seems a few local gigs
1989 did his solo set in a few shows.
1990 was there at least one tour when Mike was in Japan I think.
1995 did a gig in May
1996 Did a few shows connected with the country album. Including Nashville and Chicago.
Is this list off anywhere?

Wow, Brian played bass on those songs?

Re: Unreleased [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Yes - had his own little solo spot, three songs: "L&M", "Melt Away" & "Walkin' The Line". This was the January BB/Chicago tour - he wasn't there for the one later in the year.
I wonder how the rest of the group felt about that?  Roll Eyes

Dennis allegedly did it circa Pacific Ocean Blue - played the first three songs of the solo album. If anything, the BBs have a healthier attitude toward live solo material than most.

Mike did "Almost Summer" and "Country Pie"
Carl did "Heaven", "Rocking All Over The World" and "What You Do To Me"
Bruce did "I Write The Songs"

Any more?

With just the backing musicians, or solo on piano?

I'm pretty sure he had Michael Bernard up there with him. Got photos somewhere. Nice suit & pink shirt, I do recall.

Check the Endless Summer TV series. Brian  was backed by the BB touring band (Foskett, Hinsche, Carter, Kowalski, Meroes and Matt Jardine).

Catch A Wave does present Mike's side at least. I think you're right about the slant overall but I thought Carl got the worst of it in that book.
