Horrifying And Somewhat Humiliating [Smiley Smile Dot Net]

Posted: 11 Jul 2008 05:16 AM CDT

NOT a five star rating for this Ottawa concert.

For more than an hour, Wilson seemed pretty out of it, at least as far as fronting a band at Bluesfest goes. He spent virtually the whole 75-minutes perched on a stool, staring blankly out at the audience and singing occasionally while his enthusiastic band pumped out lively party versions of old favourites...

Initially, I found Wilson's brief show horrifying and somewhat humiliating.

I thought he had recovered sufficiently from the paralyzing mental breakdown he suffered 35 years ago enough at least to perform. Instead, an obviously exhausted Wilson looked like he wouldn't be able to finish the show, saying nothing other than monosyllabic hellos.

Just when you thought things couldn't get worse, the sound system crashed into dead silence for almost two songs early in the set.

It's a credit to Wilson that the music he wrote 40 years ago still makes old foggies feel like teenagers. Eventually, the show lost some of its macabre polish, or we just got used to seeing him in a comatose state. By then, the fans were well into the music and the memories.

But there was something about the reality of seeing Wilson like this that makes the fantasy of The Beach Boys suddenly hard to take.

Denny Remembered had some good base material but I wish it all was dated and had better reproduction.

I wish somebody would do a really good photo book on the Beach Boys.

I'd love to see something like that being released. In fact I bought stuff like the Keith Badman book mainly because of the pictures. Every picture of the group adds something to the story. Liked the Denny Remembered book very much for that very reason.

Murry's death.  Anything good after that, we should be exceptionally grateful for.

Did he even have a meaning in mind at the time?  Or was it just a couple of feels (one of which seems to have become the coda of "Morning Christmas")?

After having heard the instrumental of "Time For Bed" (as "New Orleans", I find it hard to picture that those were the original intended lyrics either...

Cheers,
Jon Blum

They're great, especially live. But I've found out that I need to be in a certain mood to be able to fully appreciate the quality of their music, it's very atmospheric, it can take you places.

I only have three of their albums, "Agaetis Byrjun" (excellent album), "(  )" and the new one with the catchy title, but I've only heard it once, so I can't say much about it. I like what they're doing though.

Yes, I love () and Takk. Von was ok, it didnt really strike me as the latter. I don't think I've listened to A byrjun, so I couldnt say much about that...

I need to check out their new stuff.

The only time I saw Brian was in the same venue I saw the Beach Boys.

Bigger than ever?Huh The band that calls themselves The Beach Boys has been reduced in a large degree to playing county fairs and five hundred seat casinos.
I hate to say it, but I agree. The venue I last saw the Touring Beach Boys was a small venue that looked just like a high school auditorium-literally very small.

Nice, intimate settings! God bless 'em. Did the people leave happy?

I clean pools and one of my customers said that she dated Mike Love in the early 80s. I know she was telling the truth because she is not very proud of it. She was one of those ladies that got around (if you know what I mean). Now she is a completely different person who has settled down and married.

What, like Mike isn't the settling down and marrying type?

I'm not saying he (Carl) should have left the touring band, but he would have had far more creative opportunities as a solo performer or with Brian/Al.

Remember, Carl had his chance for "more creative opportunities as a solo performer" in the early 1980's. I believe his words were, and I'm paraphrasing "I want to step away from the restrictions of The Beach Boys and do some things with a harder edge, a rockier edge." Or something to that effect. He did "Carl Wilson" and "Youngblood".

If Carl would've lived, he would've had the opportunity to continue his solo endeavors on the side. Hell, everybody else did! Even though they had/have problems getting them released. I don't think Carl would've left The Beach Boys to join Brian because of $$$$$$. That was always the driving factor that kept the individual beached boys coming back to The Beach Boys. Actually, if Carl had lived, it wouldn't surprised me if Brian went back to the Beach Boys....

Did anyone else notice that when Brian is playing "In My Room" on the piano, not only is it strange that they have 60-something yr. old Brian singing the part, but they dubbed someone else singing the falsetto part "tell my secrets to."  It's like rough old man Brian voice and then all of a sudden young, clear falsetto.  LOL

That whole scene was always jarring for me...old Brian's voice definitely doesn't work there.  I actually always thought that he just nailed that falsetto part, but now that I listen to it again I see what you mean.  It would have probably been better to just have a young singer do the whole thing.  It's not as if old Brian sounds much like young Brian anyways.  A young voice to go along with seeing a young Brian play would have made a lot more sense.

Wait, I diidn't really mean 'bigger than ever' like bigger than the 60's

I meant that since their terrible slump in the early 80's, and I guess there wasn't much going on in the 90's in the beach boys world.

It just seems thngs are really exciting in The Beach Boys camp at the moment.

Just how I feel

Tallied sales of records, CDs are at an all-time low, and I don't know how downloads effect that, but to say the Beach Boys are bigger than ever now doesn't seem about right to me.

I've always understood it that the record industry was at it's biggest during the 1970s. It was at that time that the Beach Boys played stadiums, and had Top 10 albums in "Endless Summer" (#1) and "Spirit of America" (#8). It would seem to me that that was when they might have been at their biggest, sales-wise.

In terms of singles, they'll never be bigger than they were in the '60s.

If you're counting from 2000 on, I guess you could say bigger than ever. But why even say that? It has no relevance to The Beach Boys history as a whole.
