Re: Friends LP in MONO vs Stereo [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Excuse my ignorance, but what is fold-down mono? Is that like pressing the mono/stereo button on a stereo?

So does this mean that Brian didn't oversee the UK mono version? Did he oversee the US mono version?

As i generally prefer stereo over mono anyway, am i better off waiting to find a stereo pressing?

Thanks for your help!

Brian didn't oversee the US mono version of the LP because there wasn't one.  Smiley

The worst photo of Brian I have ever seen.

That guy on the right doesn't look too good either.

But seriously, apart from a good night's sleep and befriending salads, he looks physically alright. It's his eyes that do it. He has expressive eyes. The picture on the back of Holland creeps me out. The hair is wild, he's unshaven, but all that pales in comparison to the look in his eyes.

Ah, sorry Jasper, didn't see that earlier post. I mean I did see it but it was a few days ago and I forgot about it.

No problem. I have to say sorry for my overreaction, I think all this negativity lately makes me a bit nervous. Roll Eyes

Ha, no problem here either. Just a complete misunderstanding on my part Embarrassed

All This Is That - Al had written another song (possibly with the same title) based on the Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken", then Mike and Carl got involved and turned it into another song; Mike wanted meditation lyrics and Carl liked a certain style of production, SO...words  & music by Al, additional lyrics by Mike, additional music by Carl

Leaving This Town - written mainly by Ricky, with addtitional music & lyrics by Carl and Blondie, and additional lyrics by Mike

Our Sweet Love - Brian probably wrote all the music, and wrote the words with Carl and Al (similar to the songwriting process on much of the "Friends" album)

Good Timin - music by Brian, words by Carl and Brian, written on their grandmother's piano in a back room at Brother Studio

It's About Time - Dennis wrote the music, Carl helped him with some of the chord changes, Dennis asked Barbara's school friend Bob Burchman to write the words, then Al modified the words and came up with the "It's About Time" hook line

Hope this helps!

C-man, first off let me say I love your site.

Where have you gotten the info for these particular songs?

He sounded cool with Endless Summer in the September 1974  Jim Pewer interview. Of course after the Caribou sessions he took an even sharper downturn destroying his voice gaining another 50 pounds etc. THere is another picutre of Brian with the disc in the pool, he looks happier. It's in the 1975 tour book.

Not that I recall but I think I have a second one Brian did later that I haven't heard yet.

Used to go to the Blue Board too when I was starting with the BBs/BW. But if you're somewhat of a logical thinking person, you won't hold out there very long. Of course, there are some nice people there but all this "Brian-is-God"-stuff, as MBE called it, really makes you wonder what these people are really like. Again, I don't think every member of that board is like that, but unfortunately enough people so that I really don't go there more often than once a year, because I always hope something will change...

Mike was great on there. Brian was funny too. Howard asks Brian if he ever slept with Joni Mitchell and Brian screams like he is repulsed.

Doesn't he also ask Brian if he has slept with Ronnie Spector and then Brian just says "not yet".

I read somewhere (Gold book, Gaines book, or some other book) that Brian posed submerged in the pool because he didn't want people to see how fat he'd gotten.

Wink  Shocked  Huh  Cool

and this kind of comment is what some people call a joke. Haha. Perhaps you noted that Brian didn't wear clothes in the pool, so this comment actually even makes sense in its stupidness. But yes, probably not intelligent enough for this board.

Did Brian get royalties for Endless Summer?

No, 'course not - he only wrote them, arranged them, produced them, played and sang on them. Why should he get royalties ?

I'm sorry if this makes me look my usual sarcastic self, but that is the single most inane question I've ever seen on any BB/BW MB in my ten years online. Just where do you think Brian's money comes from these days ?  His tours ? The merchandising ? The sales of his last few albums ?

Hey AGD, your posts makes out that B. Diddy (aka: Billy C) posted that comment, when it wasn't him police

Dammit, took the wrong quotes out. Apologies to all concerned. Except the good Sheriff, of course.

I don't share the Brian is God view. I think he has a good heart and has a one of a kind talent, but he doesn't need to be made a martyr. He made some mistakes and paid for them, and to be fair he has also had some unfortunate circumstances. Yet how many people get a fan base who genuinely loves them? Not too many, heck some creative   people don't even find a decent band. As insensitive as his "people" might be, at least he lives with the knowledge that he has made many people's life better. I haven't gone on that board for years, because no man should be deified.

Respect. I have no particular religious leanings beyond 'spiritual', but even so, when someone posts as "brian-is-god" and refers to him as "our saviour", my skin crawls just a little.

And anyway, he's not the messiah - he's a very naughty boy.

I guess the famous pic of Brian sitting on the diving board (with clothes, sorry girls) is from the same photo shoot?

Why the comment "with clothes".. did anyone expect him to be without clothes? Huh

I don't know if that's the worst Brian picture I've ever seen, but it's pretty close.  Even more frightening that he's still relatively young there.  It's bad, but some pictures I've seen from the 340 pound days are just as bad, if not worse.
He's pretty close to that there.

Every so often I will pop on over to the Blueboard and check out the posts there, mainly to just see if there are any new announcements as well as checking out any interesting posts which there usually aren't many but did anyone see that poster saying "America rules, Britain sucks" etc..? Man that guy annoyed the heck out of me!!

There is one photo of Brian which I have only ever seen once - in a video from Brian's official website which was "Photos From His Life" or something and as background music it had the Pet Sounds Live version of Let's Go Away For Awhile. There is one photo in that and Brian looks pretty damn bad, his face is all droopy etc... Does anyone know the one I'm talking about?

Re: Shared credits, but who did what? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Weirdly, I was just playing Good Timin' on the piano about ten minutes ago, and decided pretty much the same as c-man, that the music is completely Brian Wilson, has his sensibility written all over it, and that he wrote the chorus and Carl wrote the verses. The repetition of a phrase, you need good timin, good timin' etc. is indicative of Brian's mental state at the time, whereas the wishy-washy verses are more of a Carl thing.

Isn't Good Timin' REALLY similar to Surfer Girl?

I've always considered the  blueboard  to be nothing more than a merdaload of foda and I don't really go there anymore, so I've missed what's going on. What IS going on there?

Concisely, Brian's English and early American dates weren't too good, some posted so and the POB (Protectors Of Brian) went into full-on high moral gear. One in particular posted some arrogant nonsense (the dire Kenwood show as, according to him, 'superb'), and there's a new POB who seems to have it in for me: it's generally thought that this is either the original poster or wife. Actually, I'm enjoying it - reminds me of the late, lamented and wholly loopy Bobby California.
