(posted by Administrator on July 24, 2008 at 1:20 pm)

Message:

Hello everyone: Quick note to let you know a brand-new website for Brian is being worked on and will be up by August 26. The site will be state-of-the-art and will include some great new features that were not even around when this current website debuted over four years ago.

We plan on having a number of dynamic media modules including video, audio, photos and more interaction with Brian's fans - and other surprises. The new website will launch with an exciting contest that we're working on. We'll add more info as we go prior to the launch. Let us know what you'd like to see with the new website - we'll be reading the board for your comments

See you soon!

Re: Melinda Wilson or the antichrist? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

I don't have the nicest of opinions on her, but anti-christ? A bit strong, for me, anyway. Brian's back, yet he's not. Certainly doing better than in decades, yet when he's having an off-night (not just musically), it looks sad. There are some videos floating around on youtube, and he looks bad. Like, as in, sick. Yet there are others where he looks like he's digging it, although the band sounds , I dunno, "quieter". Not as rocking, as usual, and that may be affecting Brian. Or maybe it's the other way around. merda. I don't know. Still excited as all hell about TLOS, and will buy it the day it comes out.

Sorry it sounds like I changed the subject, but in a way I'm not. Bear with me. Eugene Landy was a terrible person, but he did help Brian in some ways. I won't go there with Melinda, although my feelings are known. That said, Brian has had a far better solo career than you'd expect by the sales. That's because I'm really digging the music,  GIOMH aside. Well, hell, I did like it better than Imagination (which the production and more tellingly, the horrible mix killed for me). But even then, everything has had its moments. I would like to see how Brian would sound if he had, say, Rick Rubin as a producer, but that'll never happen. The point is, Brian's done pretty good in my opinion during the time he's been with Melinda, so I gotta give her that.

I just loved when he sang "And now I just can't live without it".

You can really tell how much he's diggin' the tune at this line.  He doesn't quite make the notes, but the mere fact that he deviated from the original melody and brought it up an octave shows that he was reaaally getting into it!  I think this is a great example of Brian having fun on stage...something that a lot of people seem to think never happens.
This was the exact part of the song I had in mind when I posted that video. As far as the singing goes, he doesn't really make the note. But the EMOTION he puts in to it is a very pleasent "surprise". Also, listen to right after he says "Angels!". He improvises a little vocal "riff" that is a fairly high note, for him...and he nails it.  Smiley

In the Back of My Mind has Carl singing unison with Denny on the middle-eight.

Come to think of it, that would work really well as an opener...  sort of defining the emotive sweep of the whole thing!

Oh, and if I can ever find a clean copy of "Carry Me Home", I'd be seriously tempted to bend my rules for it!  Even though that was technically a Blondie lead...  wasn't it?  Lost my copy in a hard-drive crash years ago...

Re: SMiLE questions, of course! [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Posted: 27 Jul 2008 11:40 PM CDT

I used to be pretty  up to date on all things SMiLE, but fell out of the loop for awhile, so if some of these questions have been answered, forgive me.
1. I was looking at something today that suggested that the handwritten tracklist from Dec. '66 may actually have been written by Carl. Where did this theory come from? It was the first I'd heard of it; in fact, I still see that list referred to as 'Brian's handwritten tracklist', so it was a surprise to me that there was a chance that Carl had written it, especially since during 1966 the album was still pretty much Brian's baby.

2. As far as the tracklist goes, any ideas why 'Old Master Painter' seems to be in parentheses, then scribbled out?

3. The last I knew, there was an untitled instrumental that no one knew where it came from. Now, it seems to have been given the title 'doves of free'. Where did this title come from?

Again, if these are questions that have been answered, I apologize. I'm just getting back into all this stuff, and just when I though I pretty much knew or heard it all, it seems there's still many things out there that are new to me!

1. Theory?!? Just look at the handwriting and compare it to a Carl signature. It's a wonder it was never caught sooner.

2. Let us conduct a seance and find out. Smiley Seriously, don't know.

3. Just someone naming a tune. It has no title.

I think those reputed comments were part of the Joe Thomas lawsuit.

And I've noticed that nobody's mentioned Melinda's controversial comments about music mogul Irving Azoff. Azoff, of course was the owner of the record label for which Brian recorded his "Imagination" album. If Azoff is a crooked record mogul or did some unsatisfactory business deals with Brian, I have no problem about Melinda publicly verbally attacking him for that, but ranting against him over his ethnicity is not cool.

"He may be Satan, but at least he's our Satan." - Don Henley paying a compliment  to Irving Azoff.

What other songs do you have on your list ?

Just got back from a weekend away!

I was going for 20 tracks -- here's a rough list, after hearing the comments above...

Celebrate The News
Slip On Through
Forever (acapella version from Hawthorne, CA)
Got To Know The Woman
It's About Time
Fourth Of July
Long Promised Road (live version from Endless Harmony -- Dennis is on that, he introduces Carl)
Cuddle Up
Steamboat
Trader
Only With You
River Song
Pacific Ocean Blues
Rainbows
Farewell My Friend
My Diane? (Is Carl on that, or is it just Brian and Dennis?)
Angel Come Home
It's Not Too Late
Love Surrounds Me
Baby Blue

Anything essential I missed?

Cheers,
Jon Blum

The newly mastered Marksmen tracks sound fantastic. This is truly an essential upgrade for anyone interested in hearing this material at its best. My copy has been burning up the speakers at the Stebbins residence....Marksmen-mania!!!

Brian played a good number of 1984 gigs-He was with them in Texas that August-when he got arrested at the Republican Convention

I've never heard about that. What was he arrested for?

Re: Wild Honey [Smiley Smile Message Board]

::nod:: Yeah I agree about the drums.  And yeah I think the vocals are a bit too low in the mix on some of the tracks - but it also sounds like they're completely uncompressed, or something like that anyway.  I guess back then if you wanted reverb, compression, etc. you actually had to have an echo chamber, a compressor, etc. and couldn't just rely on digital plugins like we do so easily today and take for granted.

I guess that's why the minimalism of Smiley Smile and the more minimalistic tracks on Wild Honey work so well, whereas with the more grandiose tracks instrumentation-wise, some of the limitations of their home recording shines through a bit more.  But it's also interesting that they really did improve their sound quality with Friends just a year later.
