| Re: What is everyone listening to? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 03 Jul 2008 06:49 AM CDT Funny, I also saw Lou perform mostly the Ecstasy material on his tour of that album, and it was a great show. Maybe it was that I'd never seen him live, or that I was lucky enough to score front-row seats for free, or just a better night. But to me it showed how strong the material was that it stood up on its own. (And the show had a classic Lou moment. Someone in the crowd: "Rock 'n' Roll! Play Rock 'n' Roll! Rock 'n'--" Lou: "Shut the foda up." [audience laughs] "You can leave if you're unhappy." | ||
| Re: Jan [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 03 Jul 2008 04:50 AM CDT "Here They Come From All Over The World" is the studio version over-dubbed with screaming kids. The other tunes were recorded live in Sacramento doctored in the studio probably the same way as the BB 1964 Concert album. Thank you. I wondered because some of the vocals sound like they were double-tracked. Not to talk about how "un-live" some of the tracks sound (e.g. "All I have to do is dream") | ||

| Re: Nice BW interview from the IMAGINATION era [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 03 Jul 2008 01:23 AM CDT Very interesting, not least for the confirmation that "How Could We Still Be Dancing ?" was written (if not recorded) by July 1998. I always thought that "How Could We Still Be Dancing?" had at least a bit of a genesis with the mid 90's track "Dancing the Night Away" that the Beach Boys briefly worked on. I recall that on the instrumental track version that is floating around out there, there are a few chord changes at the beginning that sound similar to what Brian ended up doing vocally on the beginning of the track in 2004. | ||
| Re: What is everyone listening to? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 03 Jul 2008 01:10 AM CDT If I got 6 desert island discs and they all had to be Lou Reed (without including VU), I'd be pretty fodaing pissed. But if it came down to it, I'd say Transformer, Berlin, Ecstasy, New York, American Poet and ... probably RnR Animal, but not for sure. I used to be very keen on Ecstasy as well. But a funny thing happened in that I saw a live performance of Lou at the Monteraux Jazz Festival performing mostly material from said album and it was dull and lifeless. Kinda sullied my appreciation for the album, but I still like a lot of tracks. And I meant six LR picks. I'd never make it on a desert island with just Lou to listen to--I'd become way too paranoid within the first hour... | ||
| Re: Nice BW interview from the IMAGINATION era [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 03 Jul 2008 12:57 AM CDT Imagination does contain, with the possible exception of "Love And Mercy", Brian's best solo song/recording, in "Lay Down Burden" - in my opinion of course. Now, I don't know how much of it he wrote, but he sings it great.... AFAIK, he wrote at least the chorus by himself--he told the story of when he heard that Carl had cancer, he wrote the chorus. I'd say the verse was the Thomas/Wilson collaboration. He may have re-written it when he learned about Carl, but the song (with the same title) was known to exist a fair time before it was learned that Carl had cancer - and the verse lyric is patently about a woman. | ||

| Re: Nice BW interview from the IMAGINATION era [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 02 Jul 2008 11:56 PM CDT My favorite quote, which I think shows the manic part of his manic-depression: "Tomorrow, which is Saturday...tomorrow, I'm going to go to a music shop, where they sell musical instruments, and I'm going to buy a real expensive, great instrument that has all kinds of beautiful stops on it. And it's going to inspire chords, which is going to inspire melodies, which is going to inspire words, which is going to inspire production!" I think Brian being bi-polar, even though it has affected his personal life, was an essential part of his creativity. I still wonder if he could be weened off medication and learn how to utilize his condition. I think he has been quoted as saying that he is able to create beautiful melodies during moments of deep sadness. The history of the Arts has its share of tortured artists. Brian still has mood swings, but the pendulum doesn't swing quite as far in either direction anymore because of the meds. | ||
| Re: What was Carl up to 1975-1978? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 02 Jul 2008 11:06 PM CDT I've read bits and pieces about Carl's contributions to the completion of Love You. While Love You is "so Brian", I believe Carl had a lot to do with finishing some of the songs, adding parts here and there, especially guitar parts. As rough as Love You turned out, I wonder what it would've sounded like without Carl's work? I don't know what a "mixdown producer" is, but Carl got credited for that on Love You. How much guitar is actually on Love You? I haven't listened closely in a while, but I seem to recall somewhere in the liner notes that TNWSS was the only song to feature guitar. Of course that could be erroneous. Carl Wilson documentary? I also hadn't heard of it. Is it available somewhere? | ||

| Re: Nice BW interview from the IMAGINATION era [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 02 Jul 2008 10:17 PM CDT Cry. I like the guitar a lot. Brilliant. Solely written by Brian. Shame about the "blues" guitar. | ||
| Re: Nice BW interview from the IMAGINATION era [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 02 Jul 2008 09:38 PM CDT Recently, Love made idle threats from the stage that the band wouldn't do any of their car songs--"409," "I Get Around," and so forth--because they didn't want to perform tunes that celebrated "gas guzzlers"; the group had inked a deal to promote the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program True? I remember he used to make a comment in concert in jest in the early 90s. | ||
