I have to admit initially I wasn't sure about this album.

Most work Brian has done has a light touch, and a sense of humour. I didn't get any sense of irony from POB at all, it seemed all deadly serious.

So I wonder if it can ever be judged alongside BBs work despite the presence of Carl and Mike's lyrics cropping up here and there.

Dennis' influences can also be more readily observed. Whereas by 1977 you could say that the Beach Boys' main influences were their younger selves, Dennis must have had a record collection including a lot of Lennon, Harrison, Floyd and Motown.

Immediately "River Song" is a striking, epic number. But the slow numbers took some time to take effect. It's only after a while that I can say I'll be listening to this album in a few years time, and it probably will be because of the slower numbers.

I didn't understand what Dennis' problem was initially. He seemed to live a life most of us would be jealous of, the glamorous dissolute singer hanging out in one of the coolest places in the world, with the coolest people. But as we know he had a restlessness which drove him towards self-destruction.

And he documents it all here, his disillusionment, against the backdrop of the same beaches he sang about in the innocent 60s. It's like William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience - naive and totally genuine.

What makes this album memorable and unique is the atmosphere, some great tunes, a sense of depth and a beepy new age synth on the title track.

Very hard to rate, but I'd say 4.5

What about the reprint of "recording the beach boys" is that still in the pipeline? Smiley

Agree with HarveyW; I really like the album but the production is a long way dfrom the classic Wilson-era stuff that keeps getting evoked. Maybe "You're Welcome" comes to mind once or twice but not a lot else.

I once bought some High Llamas on the strength that a reviewer claimed they were emulating SMiLE, but eh only resemblance I could find was that their album sounded unfinished!  (Sorry Sean!)

What do people here think of the Fleet Foxes? I've had so many let-downs in the last few years of new young bands which 'sound like Brian Wilson' that so far I've passed.

I'm really impressed with the LP. I wouldn't say it sounded much like the Beach Boys though; I too have had bad experiences with contemporary bands that allegedly sound "Wilson-esque". The sleeve notes mention listening to Surf's Up & Harry Nilsson, but I can't see the link, beyond the genuinely wonderful vocal harmonies. It's all a good deal more folky than most BB work, but maybe shares the same feeling of spirituality.

Anyway, it's a pretty remarkable sound they make, probably the best new band I've heard all year. Take a listen to White Winter Hymnal at their myspace site:

Got mine today at a quite interesting price (less than $80, shipping included). The picture book is disappointing, there are no liner notes, but you have to admit it'll look GREAT on the shelf.  Grin

...And I never knew there was a "45" mix of California Girls. I had always assumed the LP and the 45 had the same mix.  Huh

My vinyl copy of POB arrived from Sundazed today.  A great looking package!  Unfortunately, Disc one is warped to the extent that it won't play.  I called Sundazed and they said that the entire first run of POB on vinyl is sold out, so they are doing a second run.  I'm sure Amazon and others will have it back in stock when it becomes available again.

I actually broke my original POB vinyl disc because it was warped (I DID find it for $5.99 however... This was in 1992) and I was a complete idiot and tried to warp it back into place over my stove. It actually worked but then it fell and I actually stepped on it while bending down to pick it up and busted it in half!!!!!! I haven't forgiven myself since! THEN about 5 years ago, a friend burned me a CD from the 91 issue and I STEPPED ON THAT and broke it in half while cleaning out my car!

My Sundazed vinyl copy will be kept in a safe!

Well, Brian was still recording with the Beach Boys during the first 15 years of Paul McCartney's solo career... and much of that period, Brian wasn't putting much of his written material on Beach Boys albums.

But a comparison of the two gents from 1988 to the present... a lot of weak cuts on both sides. Paul has probably had stronger moments in all, and sure his voice sounds youthful. But I like the 1988 album, Orange Crate and the Wilson/Paley lineup a whole ton. From 1988 on, I can't think of one McCartney album that I like all the way through. Not even close. But that's just me.
Here's my side by side comparison:
BW: Brian Wilson-Like almost all of the songs, pretty good singing, inconsistant production (I like "Let it Shine" and "Melt Away," dislike a number of another cuts) A-
MACCA: Flowers in the Dirt-Like almost all of the tunes, some real Macca classics; not my favorite production, but "We Got Married" is killer in all respects. A-
MACCA: Off the Ground-not as good as the previous, 40% filler, I don't dislike the production. B
BW & VDP: Orange Crate Art-superb A
MACCA: Flaming Pie-gorgeous A
BW: Imagination-horrible mixing, I don't care for the production, 70% good songs, pretty good vocals, a B-
MACCA: Driving Rain-very good A-
BW: BWPS-goes without saying that I love A
MACCA: Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard-a letdown for me, dilslike a lot of it with the exception of "Fine Line," "How Kind of You" and "Too Much Rain," but not offensive C+
BW: GIOMH-good material all around, I don't like the singing on everything but the title track, "Desert Drive," "City Blues" and "Fairy Tale," and much of the production is not my cup of tea ("DLOHNSAA"). C
MACCA: Memory Almost Full-my favorite Macca album since Tug of War, A
BW: TLOS (based on the demos and live recordings)-Brian's best material since BW 88, and probably the best overall album since The Beach Boys Love You. A

Just my two penny worth. I'd also like to apologize for derailing this thread, if it ruffled anyone's feathers...

I'm listening to a few albums today and tomorrow:
Wind and Wuthering-Genesis: which has grown to be my favorite post-Gabriel Genesis album. When Hackett split, that was it for me.
Under the Skin-Lindsey Buckingham: a terrific mellow and acoustic album, from a big Buckingham fan.
Real Gone-Tom Waits: much better than I thought it would be, just getting into Waits' work; which is fitting because he's touring and I just missed him Roll Eyes
Countdown to Ecstasy-Steely Dan: my favorite Dan album

Anybody else fans of these?

Lou Reed's The Bells

Don't have this one, quick comment on it?
As a Lou fan, I must say that it's okay, but not one of my favorites. Very weird, and a decent contrast with Street Hassle, which I think is just poetry (especially the title track). But still, The Bells has some lovely cuts, "City Lights" being my favorite (a huge Chaplin fan as well), "Stupid Man" and "The Bells," which George Starostin described as "a homebred version of Revolution 9." Just a tough listen all the way through, though Growing Up in Public is much worse and chronologically following.

On a related topic... it seems that every time Capitol puts out a new compilation, it features new stereo mixes of more Today/Summer Days tracks.  How close are we getting to having stereo mixes of both albums?  I think its just a few more tracks that haven't been remixed yet.

They were a great band. I probably saw them a dozen times, mainly at 14 Below in Santa Monica. They really missed their moment by playing the same club over and over again to (seemingly) the same small group of family and friends. I caught them at Dragonfly on Melrose too. They never put any time in on the road to snag a following and they never played around enough in LA to cause a buzz -- but they were ALWAYS incredibly tight and always peppering their sets with new tunes. They got a song from their album on a soundtrack -- and then nada. They played SF once. That was their "tour."

I remember their message board was always filled with middle-aged female BB fans from Europe asking them inane questions about about sports which Carl B. always responded to politely.

Justyn and Mario are really talented guys, but Carl B. could be another Stewart Copeland. A really intelligent drummer. Powerful, fast -- but really smart. It was always a great show. Their appearance at the last CWF benefit that I caught wasn't indicative of what they could do in a club. They should've gone for it.

There's a stereo remix of Country Air out on bootlegs, whose mix it is, I don't know.

Equal highest ranked album for reviews for the month with "What Does It All Mean? 1983-2006 Retrospective"
by Steinski and just a tad ahead of the Fleet Foxes and Nick Cave. Not bad.

It might happen someday, but you have to keep showing that you're interested in the Beach Boys to EMI.  It probably won't be all-in-one, but more of it might come out on comps, boxsets, etc.  There are some great candidates for remix on WH, for sure.

Re: New US singles box-set [Smiley Smile Message Board]

It's a competely different, and many would argue inferior, mix. Not even used on the 'Good Vibrations' box (for whatever reason). It's surprisingly hard to find on cd. The 1999 'Greatest Hits, Vol.1' is one of the very few (and, by far, easiest) places it can be found...
I personally don't prefer it either, but if you're going to call something the US Singles Collection, you should use the single mix, regardless of whether it's the best version.

Re: What is everyone listening to? [Smiley Smile Message Board]

Frankly, I find a lot of their alleged experimentalism (I don't think there's anything particularly experimental about it) tedious, but when they set their minds to pop, they were a great band.

I tend to think similarly, inasmuch as I don't think their stuff is quite as trippy or odd as its reputation might suggest. I generally like 'em for their poppier side.

A state of urgency? I'd like to see it happen, but I think that may be overstatement.

Re: brianwilson.com - New TLOS VIdeo [Smiley Smile Message Board]

One reason why I asked why we were comparing them is because it's not really fair. When Paul does a poor job, it's possibly because of laziness or carelessness. When Brian does a bad job, it's also possibly because of laziness or carelessness... or because he's got brain damage...or because he's mentally ill... or because, as some argue, other people are actually doing most of the work.

So it's complicated. I'm not trying to make excuses for Brian, but I bring up the peaks of his work because I think, considering all of the above, they're remarkable. And I think TLOS is remarkable, because it's an attempt to be more than just another album. It's this "longform work" with themes running through it. Paul's most recent album apparently has a theme too, but I just think Paul has fewer excuses when it comes to doing less than stellar work.
