Re: Does TLOS have songs that could be hit singles? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 Sep 2008 04:19 AM CDT Although I love the whole album, I don't see a potential hit single. Radio has never been kind to Brian, his sole top 40 hit being Caroline No right before the release of Pet Sounds. As great as TLOS is, I don't think this is going to be an exception. That being said, I think that I read that "Goin Home" was going to be the single and that Brian was going to perform it on a couple of TV shows. |
Re: Official TLOS Album Reviews [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 Sep 2008 03:03 AM CDT My review, which will run in the paper I work for next week. It's um -- quite positive. And very, very well said! Cheers, Jon BLum Hi Jon, what paper do you write for, I'll look out for it. Also I haven't checked with the local record store but seeing you have done a review I guess its actually getting a release in Australia - what info do you have, is it this week? |

Does TLOS have songs that could be hit singles? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 Sep 2008 02:17 AM CDT I think it wouldn't be impossible for "Good Kind of Love" to be a hit single... I can see it happening. Oh, and does anyone else think it sounds like the perfect theme song for one of those romantic comedies (the type that almost always seem to feature Hugh Grant)? Not sure if that's a good thing though... |

Re: BW piano demos [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 Sep 2008 12:58 AM CDT Well, we know that Al can sound a lot like Brian singing, which shows that it IS possible that its him. But go beyond that, the way he talks, the insecurity, the uncertainty in his voice...its just not Alan. Alan had no reason to sound like that ESPECIALLY during the Holland era, he was a strong and sober person, we all know about Brian's condition. Then go on beyond the singing/speaking voice to the piano playing...we have tons of pieces of Brian jamming on the piano how he stops and goes when he messes up, the style that hes playing in...its simply put, Brian. Agreed 100%. |
Re: Allmusic doesn't like it -- Billboard does [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 Sep 2008 12:58 AM CDT It ought not be too surprising that allmusic didn't give TLOS a great review. They have been pretty hard on BW solo material, and even BBs material overall. In the past few years they've re-reviewed most of the back catalogue, but I bought a late 90s edition of their book (See, kids, in the old days the Internet was called books, and they were made of paper and ink...updates were made by buying new editions, and so on. These were hard times.) and it pretty consistently gave BBs albums 2-3 stars. Things like Sunflower (now 4.5), Surf's Up, Smiley Smile and Wild Honey (all now 4) were all lowly regarded. For whatever reason, that's just how they come at the stuff. So allmusic and the Guardian don't like it. Oh well. Other major outlets did. And there are more (and more mixed reviews) to come. Most non-fanatics would probably agree this isn't a flat-out classic, and so it's bound to be reviewed hot and cold. Taste plays a huge part, and I think most people can understand why this wouldn't be to everyone's. It's not that big a deal. Rolling Stone has done that with reviews in the past as well. I had an album guide back in the day that had rated POB 2.5 stars, Friends, 20/20 two stars. I remember it had Sunflower at three stars, which years later made their list of top 500 albums of all time. |

Mike Love - the REAL lyricist on Surfin' USA? [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 Sep 2008 12:53 AM CDT In that Goldmine article (September 18, 1992) Mike Love says: Quote Then I wrote 90 percent of "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari" and "Surfin' U.S.A.," which I wasn't credited on either. So what's the deal here? Obviously this was just before he sued Brian for co-authorship of those 30 odd songs but why then if he claims that he co-wrote Surfin' U.S.A. he wasn't given credit? And of course there was also that interview in more recent times where he claimed he co-wrote "Don't Worry Baby" yet he never sued for that one either. So I'm just curious, does Mike REALLY know what he wrote and what he didn't? |

Re: BW piano demos [Smiley Smile Message Board] Posted: 01 Sep 2008 12:45 AM CDT We're gonna start this debate again? It's NOT Al, its Brian...I'm 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999% sure of it (leaving that one bit just in case its Carl ya know? gotta cover your grounds...) as I've listened to it a billion times and even cleaned the piece up as much as possible. The way the person talks, sings, and plays is all Brian. I'm with you Jonas, and anyone else who says it's Brian. But then again, I have always thought the GV early version with Asher's lyrics was Carl but that's Brian. And even the GOK (Brian lead vocal) from the PS Sessions Box sounds a lot like Carl in some places to my ears... So I suppose that means I wouldn't know would I? |
